I have been closely watching eBay for about a year but recently seen several 12-str guitars with stress cracks in the bowl, even one with a large crack. Must have been a great impact to create this damage...maybe John Daly actually did use them to tee off with...

I know, he plays a Taylor but can't imagine what else would have done the damage.

A crack in the bowl is not good. It is basically a structural part of the instrument and a crack there could weaken it greatly and bring about other problems

Wow a cracked bowl is impressive. Two things I have learned in the last year are that the bowls when not attached to the top and such are quite plyable, but as soon as the top with the bracing is in place, they are solid. The second is, they are almost indestrable. We had a completely busted guitar (neck broken, top bashed etc... ) may have been a reject, as I don't know where it came from... but a few of us, jumped and pounced and beat the thing, and only the wood gaveway. I have it here and have jumped on the bowl only to slip off and hurt myself. I can't imagine a crack unless it was subjected to extreme tempature changes.

wow that is one of the hardest parts to break. IN all honesty I am shocked to see them out there with cracked bowls.

Did you notice the one from zxdeal had a pick holder stuck to the backside of the peghead(neat!) and it has what looks like a Fender 50th anniversary sticker on the front of the peghead(why?)

Nice,clear pics also!!!

I'm wondering if it's just the finish (he sais it doesn't go all the way thru) as we know the bowl finish is very very thin. Still, I can honestly say I have never seen this before and I am surprised.

To me this is a sign of either very bad accidents or just plan abuse. There's no excuse for Ovation abuse!

In over 30 years of playing Ovations, I've never seen a cracked bowl. My guess is that any Ovation with a cracked bowl has been badly abused and should be avoided. It makes you wonder what other problems the guitar might have.
