OK, now here's an idea for the Ovation website: I think they should have a section called "Build Your Guitar". This section would consist of a Configuator which lets you select all the components making up your guitar! You would select Bowl Depth, Cutaway or not, Soundboard, Neck Width, Strings etc.
It also tabulates the price for you. When finished, you'd be able to look at a good representation of your new guitar. A button at the bottom would say "Place Order".
Let me know what you think.

But then they couldn't have the "limited" editions like the Folklore Deluxe and the Glen Campbell.....

I myself would rather see this than the limited editions, though.

I mean exactly like the Paragon site in your link. I tried it and built my dream guitar in just a couple minutes. This is very similar to the way you order a Dell Computer. Just let them know exactly what you want with their web site configuator, send them the booty and they send you your dream PC. It's a nice system where everyone wins. We could all use Al as our distributor.
If Ovation wants to hold back on the collectors series or other special guitars, they can simply opt to leave those selections out of the configuator.

I kinda like that idea. It could only calculate retail price or msrp for the features and then it would be up to the dealer to deal, I suppose.

That is a good idea, and to add to it the label could be personalized with the buyer's name, date built, etc.. Maybe even an inlay like the one that is missing on Paul H's Legend with the buyer's name.

I really like your idea about personalizing the guitar with the buyer's name. What a nice touch for something that special.

I bought a boat that came with a nice little gold plaque by the helm that said "This boat is made especially for........". They misspelled my name.

I have to assume you then changed your name so as not to embarass the boat maker. After your warning, I am definately going to check out my tombstone before I let them place it over my resting place, I don't want to be greeted at the Pearly Gates as "Barely".

I purposly misspelled my name on a warrenty registration card once just to see if it went anywhere else. It did. Whenever I get junk mail with that spelling, I know who to thank.

Like the idea of the custom guitar, but wouldn't that be veeeeery expensive?

Peterbright, not sure if you are referring to the website or the guitar. Based on what I have heard, a custom guitar is not as expensive as you might think. As for the website, a good Flash artist could whip up an interface for creating a guitar rather easily in the scheme of things.

Is this idea something that is remotely possible for your web site? I have no idea what is involved or the costs associated with it.
