With the new LX series having truss rod covers, I started thinking what various Ovation's look like with and without truss rod covers. What do you think? Do you like the way the Ovation headstocks looks with a truss rod cover? My favorite is my old Custom Legend with the carved truss rod cover. So yes are no to truss rod covers?

I've installed truss rod covers on most of my headstocks which didn't have them. I think it looks so much more professional. Dave

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

When truss rod cover is carved walnut, signature such as GC, or the 2002 Collectors - great. When it appears as a piece of black plastic as on my 1763 Classic, I wonder why it couldn't be walnut to match the bridge or tinted to match the headstock. I look at the simplistic beauty of the 1763 with gold tuners and the 1st thing that jumps out is the black cover. Would a tinted cover with gold "Classic" have added that much cost? Makes me consider carving a wood replacement.

From previous posts, maybe Ovation should have the name CELEBRITY on that line's truss covers. If no truss rod, silkscreen.

I think a truss rod cover gives a guitar a classy look, especially if it states the model in an attractive manner, like the GC models did, or like Gibson Les Pauls do.

I see that the LX models are going to say "LX" on some of them at least....not sure if I like that yet. Absolutely NO WAY should Celebrity models have truss rod covers or silkscreen or ANYTHING....it should be a visual difference for the U.S.-made guitars. An easy way to show the upgrade.....

I think truss rod covers--in general--give the headstock a more complete look and are much more pleasing to my eye than the rather "plain" look of the headstocks that don't have one.

Only reason I thought of the truss rod cover for Celeb was that unless you look at the sticker/label, a lot of confusion as the headstock says Ovation. If the cover said Celebrity it would separate the two lines. I don't know but there is confusion as to the lines.

Just bought a 12-str slothead GC...with the GC rod cover...the signature tells everyone what model it is and that it is up there in the model line. Also, as the guitar is dark sunburst, the cover blends with the finish rather than a contrast with the finish. My Classic with a light headstock, the black cover is a distraction from the wood/finish and gold tuners.

Congrats on the GC.

I completely agree that the Truss Rod Cover adds to the look of the guitar. Decorative or not, it gives it a complete look.

I have Slotheads with covers and Eiite w/o and I personally like the truss cover look.

Everyone has an opinion, so for what it's worth.

So, there could be a "cottage industry" in making trussrod covers, eh?
Monograms, flowers, pets, and other perversity included?
Aesthetics versus functionality may be the issue. When some gyro takes off his trussrod cover, and no device presents itself, does he immediately ship it to the factory for repair?
While we are on the subject of functionality and practicality, this might be a great place for attaching your cellular phone holster, or, even better, your .45 Casull. Whaddya think, Guys?

from Seesquare's post: "...or, even better, your .45 Casull."

maybe we could call that line Soprano after the cable show...

I will replace the Classic black cover with a walnut, keeping the original in case I ever sell...the headstocks w/o a cover will remain w/o.

Congratulations on your Glen Campbell 12-String!

When I got my GC 12-string, the original signature cover had been replaced with one that had the name "Fernando" engraved on it.

Fortunately, I had an extra GC rod cover at the time, but I guess it goes to show that even a truss rod cover can't difinitively identify a guitar...LOL! ;)

My GC 12 string is from 1969. The truss rod cover is blank, but Glen's signature is silk screened onto the head of the guitar above the truss rod cover and between the tuners. I suspect that this was just before Ovation went to the signed truss rod covers on the GC 12's.

Paul, hadn't noticed it before - went back to check out the picture...I am impressed. Looks like the guys at Ovation did a nice job.

The imports should say Celebicy and the USA should say Honda.

I must be one of the minority on this. I look at my O's and A's and M's on the wall right now and none of them have truss rod covers! It's clean and nice. As much as I love the carved TR cover on the CL and GC nylon proto, they feel like add-on's instead of an integral part.
By the way, my 1119 has the cover but my 1619 doesn't, are they all like that?

Michael:

All I can think of is that the acoustic electric Custom Legend is newer than the straigh acoustic one, and has a Kaman bar. By the way, thanks and I'll call you in the next day or so.

I think that all the guitars look good. Everybody has their hot spots on what they think looks right with their guitars. For me, it's always been gold tuners. I keep debating with myself about putting gold tuners on my 68 Deluxe Balladeer, but the chrome Grovers on it work perfectly. What a problem it is....

For the Custom Legend #1619 6-str, not sure of the exact year but my 1982 doesn't have one, there is the carved walnut cover on the 1978-1979 #1619 that Paul Hebert has. Both are a/e. The #1158 CL 12-string (acoustic) that I bought in 1980 had one.

I'm with Michael on the truss rod covers. Neither of my O's have a truss rod cover & I like 'em that way. If they had a reason for a cover fine, but I personally wouldn't add one to my guitars just for looks. I rather like the smooth look, it matches the tops of the guitars- no knobs, no visible pickups, no pick guard. Rocks you bones plugged in. I like that.

The Kaman bar was phased in in the early 1980's, eliminating the need for a truss rod cover.

Just curious...why would a 1988 #1763 Classic nylon string slothead have a truss rod cover?

Seems a little unusual as it is nylon string and 12-fret to the bowl (however, cutaway.)

I would guess that the nylon strings have truss rods becuase shit happens. A neck could need adjustment due to weather, or other factors, not just due to string tension. It speaks well of Ovation that they would put in a tenion rod where others would save the money.

Neither my 96' Custom Legend or 02' 1687 Adamas have a truss rod cover, I'm happy !

If they did I wouldn't care either.

I can't believe this is an issue at all !

Doesn't Honda have 2 or 3 models called LX? The Oddessey LX, Inacurate LX, Qualude LX. Maybe it's not Honda but one ofd the other J cars, you know they all look alike.
