Location: Madison, Wisconsin | Just wondering how many people use their Balanced XLR connection, if equiped, and what the advantages are.
(Yes, it's 7AM on Christmas morning and this IS my life) |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I've used the XLR connection because it allows me to plug right into the snake box and go direct to the mixer at church. Dave |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | XLR uses low impedance, so a much longer cable run without signal loss. |

Location: Scotland | The Op50 & Optima pre's have balanced outs. Balanced signals use the principle of phase-cancellation. If you have 2 identical in-phase signals their amplitude when summed will double. If they are out of phase they will cancel totally when summed. In a high impedance unbalanced cable, such as a standard guitar cord, you have 2 wires, which are signal (hot) & ground. A balanced system has 2 hot wires plus ground. One of the hot wires carries a signal which is 180 degrees out of phase in relation to the other. This would normally produce total cancellation of the signal, however at the input stage the phase of one is inverted, which not only produces a 6dB lift in gain, but as a result of the phase-inversion any interference or noise carried equally by both the in-phase & anti-phase hot wires gets cancelled. So, a balanced output has more gain with less interference. Low impedance means it is capable of driving much longer cable runs, plus you don’t need to use a direct box. Hope that made some kinda sense. |
