All GC12's were slotheads and only came in natural or sunburst. I did however see one about 5 years ago from approx. 1975 that the owner had the factory refinish in gloss black. It was the best looking GC12 I had ever seen. Dave

I didn't see the black one on ebay, but it sounds like a different one than I had previously seen. The one I saw was definately mid 70's serial number and it had a truss rod cover. Dave PS - Did the later natural GC12's switch to brown bowls or did they always stay with the black?

If you guys want, on Sunday, when I've got some time, I'll scan and post a few pages from the catalogs I have regarding the GC 12 string. I've got the 1968/69 introductory sheets regarding the GC guitars (and as Dave/standingovation pointed out on that, it appears to be a photo of Glen's guitar with his initials airbrushed out at the 12th fret and the 3 inlays brushed in), the 1970 catalog, the 72 catalog, the 77 catalog, and the 80 catalog.

Is there anyway to actually verify that Ovation dos not make additonal one off color guitars from time to time or when you custom order a guitar from the Factory will they produce it in a color different from the standard. Come to think about it were there ever any black pacemakers produced? John

As well as the top grain, the grain on the rosewood bridge is very distinctive and has helped me identify it on a few photos. I looks like all the fret markers were touched up in the photo to make them stand out more. I would guess the 12-string is the first one too? Would love to track that sucker down! Wayne

Also, the seller for my GC 12-string says he bought it new from Mandolin Bros in 1986. This is NOT to make any inference that Dave is wrong, it just means I am CONFUSED. Were the GCs in the 1982 catalog, but were never made? Did Mandolin Bros. have a new GC 12-string kicking around for 5 years before it was bought? Maybe the guitar was actually used and my seller doesn't remember that? I don't have the serial number; when I get the guitar it will clear up some of this. One of Glen's 6-strings is in the Country Music Hall of Fame....wish I could have taken a picture of it to post, but they don't allow photography. I guess the list could be incomplete. Dave PS - The old "don't blame me I'm only the messenger" excuse.

Looking at the model 1118 page on Ovation's website....it appears that the picture is NOT a Glen Campbell 12-string, but a CUSTOM LEGEND....so....be careful with believing everything on the Discontinued Model pages....this may well apply to the "1982" catalog blurb there as well. For what it's worth....I'm sure a lot of you knew this, but I was surprised to realize that my GC 12-string is a 12-fret, not a 14-fret like my Melissa Etheridge. Joined: September 2002 Posts: 153 | Although I do not recall the exact serial number, I sold a sunburst Glen Campbell 12-string a couple of years ago that had a 29XXXX serial number, thus dating it late 1982. It was a transitional model, in that it had the old, composite bowl before the 1983 change, as well as a drilled hole in the cross brace for the K-bar, although it had a truss rod. As with most prodution guitars, it generally takes a few months, and sometimes a few years in certain cases, for production to catch up with the catalog, thus leaving discontinued models available during a time-frame that they should not theoretically exist.

It was just given a new name (Legend 12-String) when they made the switch from slotheads to closed headstocks, and went from 12 to 14 frets clear on all their 12's. My best guess is that this change took place in 1982 or very early '83. Jeff

Trboy, I think that's great.....if what you want doesn't exist, take it into your own hands to CREATE it!!!! :) Roger 1976 Applause AA14-4 6-String 2001 Adamas 1598-MERB Melissa Etheridge 12-String 2003 Celebrity CC01 Spruce Top 6-String NOW HERE - 1981 1118-1 Glen Campbell 12-string
