Location: Phoenix AZ | This week is NAMM, so I thought I'd post a little piece of history. Here is the layout from "The Music Trades" magazine in June 1967 informing the industry of Ovations presence at the 1967 NAMM show. I think this was their first one (don't thnk they were at NAMM in '66). The layout shows the following 1st generation guitars: Balladeer w/ ribbon rosette, Classic w/ zig zag rosette, The Josh White, The Deluxe Balladeer, Shallow Contempory Folk Classic (never made it to production), and the original 12-String w/ small sound hole. These are some great examples of the earliest Ovations. All shiny bowls, inlaid rosettes, brazillian rosewood bridges. I'm proud to say I own 4 of the 6 (soon to be 5). The ringer in the group is the Contemporary Folk Classic. Only 4 were ever made (Sam owns one) and they were shallow bowls. Yes, Ovation was experimenting with a shallow bowl in '67. In hind sight a nylon string guitar was probably not the best choice to put it on. I suspect that if they had done it on a Balladeer it may have made it to production way back then.

Location: SoCal | That's great Dave. "Soon to be 5 out of 6"? Does that mean you're buying the classical I turned you on to?
I've only got 1 out fo the 6. But it gets played everyday and at church. It may be the best sounding 6 string I own. |

Yes, I'm still chasing a classical but my progress has been slowed somewhat by the accounting firm of W.M.&C. associates (Wife, Mortgage, and College). Dave |

Location: SoCal | I'm miking it thru a condenser mic (don't ask me which one, I don't know) and into a small eq board, then into the house system. It sounds really wonderful.
I empathize with the cash flow problem. I've got a possible line on a GC DB and just don't know if I can swing it now. Then there's the new LX.... |

The story i heard about the contemp. folk classic is that they took the four prototypes to the namm show and did not write any orders for them.They canned the idea soon after they returned from the namm show..The guitars went as far as catalogs and on to price sheets but never went beyond the four prototypes..They actually have a great big sound for a supershallow bowl body.I have always liked the shallow bowl non cutaway..As far as i know they may be the only few made that way.. |
