Is there something strange about an older Legend getting a bid of at least $730 on eBay?

I know that one auction does not a trend make, but if so this is great news for sellers and alarming news for buyers.

FWIW, I just sold a 2003 Custom Legend #1869 FRG with OP50 and case for a lot less than what the bid is on that Legend.

Al: good news!? Values may be going up!!! Stay tuned for further details...

If this is what you're looking at

http://64.224.220.97/discus/messages/2/812.html?1073955289

I don't even think it's a Legend. The fretmarkers are all wrong. Looks like a Celeb to me.

Whoops. Wrong link. Sorry.

Paul,

I think you got the wrong link. This is the one I am talking about:

Paul B., I wouldn't make any conclusions from this.....I checked the bid history and it looks like a couple of eBay "newbies", with not enough experience about what items are really worth on eBay, bidding an item up beyond its "normal" value.

Sometimes you will see what I call a "newbie death duel", where there are two newbies that "gotta have it" and they drive a price way, way high!!! Great for the seller!

I'm happy that a serviceman about to deploy was the beneficiary of this high price.

For the past few days I had been checking the price of the 1867 you mentioned, along with three more 1867's. I was not interested in buying, just in what the price would go to. I have my eye on one locally. Like you I was surprised at the bids. 2 were around 500/600, 1 started at 900! and had a bidder! The one that you mentioned was at 380, I had no idea it would go as high as it did. I just checked on the one that is left and it is at 605 with a little over an hour to go.
I believe the 900 and 730 exceed the price of a new FRG from places like OVG and others.
I couldn't help but wonder if the bidder at 900 wasn't a little sick if he saw the prices on the others.

I hope the person who got this for $730 knows what they are getting. I agree with the the esteemed Mr. PI. The location of the bridge pins is Celeb, not USA. Also he describes the electronics as volume and 3 band EQ. Probably DJ-4. Any new Legend purchased 4 months ago would have OP-30 or something similar.

As far as price, assuming it was really a Legend, I'm not totally shocked by $730. The guy probably paid close to a grand for it 4 months ago. I just sold an '86 Legend 1867 last month for $560 which I thought was a good price for both me and the buyer. We all know there is nothing out there that can compete in that price range.

It's a Celeb. Bridge shape, thinline pickup, inlays, headstock shape, rosette all indicate that it's not a USA guitar, and certainly not a Legend. Just shows how careful you have to be as a buyer on ebay. Unless he's used the wrong pic & is sending out the guitar described, this would constitute fraud.

I'm not drawing any conclusions, and my shared observation was meant to be humorous, too. Sometimes I succeed in that.

So, I am not drawing any conclusions. I was early trained that a sample size of one is not a very reliable study.

"Newbie death duel" is a great turn of phrase. And if they were going to bid one up, I am very glad to see the money to one of our servicemen going overseas.

As to the preamp, there were several available on Legends that had three band preamps. The guitar was probably bought NOS, and could have had a Hex-Fex, OP24E, or OP24 preamp, all of which have three band EQ sections. But unless it was an OP24, wouldn't you think that it would have been better described?

Worst case scenario is that it IS a Celebrity with a DJ-4. If so, the guy better deploy quickly.

This is why I always buy new, I know what I am getting. More importantly when electronics are involved

Blaze, I understand what you mean, but what if the guitar you desire hasn't been made in many years? That's the case for a lot of us on this board. I don't worry about electronics because that can always be upgraded. My good friend Paul has a '68 12-string with OP-40 electronics. You just can't buy shit like that new. Dave

I beleive Mr. Blaze is just sounding out the old "Let the Buyer Beware!".
Last night I saw a great looking, used 12-string Ovation for $600. At a closer look, the bridge was firmly attaced to the top but the top was all caty-whompus. You would never be able to see it in an E-bay picture.

I have to disagree with standing ovation. You said that the guitars you want, you cant get because they are not made anymore. You can get anything you want and I stress anything if you are willing to pay for it. Prime example is the Elite T Bass that I had built. That guitar isnt even listed as a model and poof there it is.
Although I work there,I still had to pay.Even did alot of the work my self. If you are willing to pay we will build it.
Its all good

I understand what you are saying, but for most of us, the cost is a factor. While I'm hoping to buy a Legend LX later this year, special ordered the way I want it, most of the time, I can't afford to spend a couple thou' on a guitar. The used market makes it easier to find what I want at a price my wife will let me afford. For you guys to build me a 1969 GC 12 string, with modern electronics, I'd pay 5 or 6 times what my guitar cost me (well, actually, it was a gift, but you get my meaning).

Yeah I hear what you are saying, I guess I am kind of spoiled since I could pretty much build any thing that I wanted. Even it is not offered, I could probably get it built. Wouldnt it be nice if things you really want didnt cost so much.I guess that is life though.
Carry on people and see you in March !

Yes, CMS-Man you are correct. There are THREE options. 1) buy it new, 2) buy it old, 3) have it custom made. Good call. Dave

PS - I'm no stranger to custom work. Check around the factory and you'll see a nice slothead Adamas with a custom neck on it. Belongs to some guy in Arizona.

Got a feeling that Ovation will have a good year based on LX, 30th Anniv CL, and possibly the new slothead Adamas. A lot to talk about. Wonder what the 2004 Collectors looks like.

As to the Mustang, check out Car and Driver - "styled with a dash of '67, a teaspoon of '69, amd two full cups of '64 fastback." 300hp for GT engine. It says first new chassis in 25 yrs yet a look closer to the earlier years. At least it would have room for a couple of guitar cases...my '98 GT conv can barely handle the golf clubs.

Nice to hear you all saying some nice things about my company's products......

Shhhh....the chassis is actually based on the Lincoln LS and Thunderbird.....we used cobbled-up Lincoln LS vehicles for prototypes. With the disguises and camo that are used on the sheet-metal prototypes, I hadn't seen what it really looked like until now myself.

from Al: "Tony there is not an 04 collectors this year the 30th anniv CL took its place"

All the more reason to order the CL early...180 for the domestic market.

As a prior Camero Z-28 & sports cars...the '98 GT is a well balanced car, especially for a conv. Rio red.

cms-man....SWEET....289 hi-pos were rare in '67, most "performance-minded" buyers bought the 390 big-block. Think it was cheaper than the 289 hi-po.

Al....I learned to drive on my parents' 1967 Bonneville with a 400....turquoise blue....so I know your Catalina is a nice car! Smooth, good power.

The Custom Legend reissue takes the place of the 2004 CE???? Holy squeeze play, Batman!!!! Only 180 for the U.S.??? Buy now, or forever be left holding your wallet!!!!
