Ya know Serge, for a guy who just got back into playing a few years ago, you've got some of the very best Ovations ever built (I'm thinking specifically of the 08C, 87C, and Adamas I RI). It just doesn't get a whole lot better than that......

Thanks Paul. I owe it to the great advice and information from all of you. That and the privilege of playing so many rare and high-end O's and A's at all the gatherings I've been to really helped me find the right guitars for me. I might add the 1537 to that list, too ;)

Now on to my impressions and some pics. First off, I need to call the guitar store I got if from and find out if this is used or NOS. The guitar and case are absolutely pristine, both look like they just came from the factory. All the case candy is there, too. If it is NOS, then I just got (for me) the deal of the century.

Playability is excellent. The strings look and sound brand new, probably the Adamas 1818s it was originally strung with. The action is, as usual from the factory with a full complement of shims, just a hair on the high side for most people, but I prefer it that way. I think the higher break angle really makes the tone and volume sing.

On an A/B comparison with my 08C, the 1687 has the 1-11/16 nut vs. the 1-3/4 on the Collectors. For some reason, that difference doesn't seem as pronounced as when I switch from the 08C to, say, the 87C or the 1537. The neck itself on the 1687 is a bit beefier than on the wood tops (except for the K-bar deep-V 1619 I have), so that might be the difference. Although I really like the "manly" 08C neck, the 1687 is still very easy to play.

Tone-wise, to my ears the 1687 has a stronger middle than the 08C, resulting in a more "woody" sound (if that's a word that can be used to describe a CF/lyracord guitar). The highs on the 08C are a bit crisper, and the bass on both booms. Both are equally loud, both are very well balanced for their particular tones, with no particular range overwhelming any other. Different tones, both great. Now I get to have fun discovering which songs sound better on which guitars.

Bottom line: one happy Gator :D

Now some guitar porn (high-res pics on ning):

I Really gotta get me one of them one of these days!
Very Nice!

And I think that it is nice that the pick-guard (snot-blob) is not so noticeable on this one.

But that sure is nice.

Great guitar. These always struck me as having the traditional Ovation sound, but on steroids. Which is, of course, illegal (but fun).......
