I have little experience and a couple of questions over "starter" amplification systems.
The most frugal I have seen was at the Scottish Highland Games this last summer where the spokes-lass of the local SCA was in direct competition to be heard with the pipers and drums that were "warming up". She posted two large swordsmen at either side to repeat what she said - loudly, and with some interpretation. It was cheap but not so effective.

I'm looking for plan to build up (proggressive add-ons)a small P/A system. Or should I just make purchase of a "set".

The target is for small room or backyard venues with 2-3 mics and/or 2-3 instruments. At this time I have an acoustic amp (Fender Frontman 25R). I'm thinking that next is a powered mixer for 8 followed by adding speaker/monitors as I find and fund them.
BTW - This should also work for Rest Homes and other small ventures.

I am open to your suggestions :)

Mwoody,

Look at the recent Posting of mine "Portable PA Systems"... it might help... I'm leaning toward the Kustom (for the same venues as you speak of).... but Paul and others have good ideas...

Rather than a powered mixer & a pair of speakers I'd recommend a pair of powered speakers & a compact mixer with onboard effects and a graphic EQ. Check out the JBL Eon 10's, Samson Expeditions & the new Mackie 10's. For a mixer look at Behringer & Mackie.

powered speakers weigh too much especially if you are using good ones like JBL or EV
go with separate power then if they go down you can have a back up

I guess my question should be more like this: Should I save and invest in something "big" now or is it ok to peice meal a system?
