I never have but wondering whether I should start using one for no other reason than others do and it may make the bass lines a little more defined.

Never liked them. I have a very thick and hard thumbnail as a result of an argument I had with my table saw - it works better than any thumb pick I've used.

I have been blessed with thick, heavy nails. Even when I break one, they grow back fast, especially if I soak them.

I have tried several different types of thumb picks, but never really got comfortable with any of them. I'm growing my thumbnail to give that a try.

I haven't tried too many picks, but couldn't get the hang of the ones I used. I've been successful recently in growing nails on my right hand, but I usually just use the side of my thumb.

I tried it for a while... the problem was it changed the position of my hand so drastically... I started messing up...

I was initially Classically (sp) trained so finger picking comes naturally now... use the portion of your thumb at the edge of your nailbed (when placing you hand in position, the lowermost portion and you will be able to get just as much Low Note definition

I don't but wish i had used one when i started. I like the tone better. But now it's too late -- too much muscle memory to start over.

I have finger pics sitting in a draw and even though it's an extreme embarrassment to my son I have long fingernails on my picking hand.
This way I can go from slow picking to fast precise Spanish fluid appegio picking.
I never fealt comfortable with finger pics at all I personally find them cumbersome.

If I'm using finger picks, e.g. alaskapiks, I always use a thumb pick as well. Keeps the relative tone the same for all fingers. If I'm not using finger picks, I typically don't use a thumb pick.

I especially like the speed pick (first one on the left in Crimsonlake's post above). I find I can be most accurate and consistent in tone with that style. Not always easy to find though.

Lately, I've taken to wearing a single alaskapik on my index finger instead of using a flat pick. Using a 'sort of' frailing style. I have found that to be my most accurate, most versatile style for playing. Also lets me punch through, when required, in group settings.

The French are born with thumbpicks. They don't get it from their mommy they get it from their Dadi.

I never could find one that was comfortable and if they shift slightly it throws me off so I gave up and just use the side of my thumb.

I tried to use a thumbpick a few centuries ago. Didn't like it.

Then I tried to grow my nails, but the temptation to chew them off was too great.

I think I make a fairly passable attempt at fingerpicking, but if I was doing it in a jam, I'd need a little amplification. Otherwise, I adapt my playing and use a flatpicking style. (I think its called flatpicking...)

I like the way they sound but i never could get used to them(thumb and finger pics). I went as far as wearing them around the house.

...I don't use a 'thumbpick,' however, I do use a regular 'flat pick' held with my thumb and forefinger...then use the remaining three fingers for "finger-picking."

...makes for clean, clear, snappy bass notes, especially when comp'ing chordal jazz lines.
