I was initially Classically (sp) trained so finger picking comes naturally now... use the portion of your thumb at the edge of your nailbed (when placing you hand in position, the lowermost portion and you will be able to get just as much Low Note definition

This way I can go from slow picking to fast precise Spanish fluid appegio picking. I never fealt comfortable with finger pics at all I personally find them cumbersome.

If I'm not using finger picks, I typically don't use a thumb pick. I especially like the speed pick (first one on the left in Crimsonlake's post above). I find I can be most accurate and consistent in tone with that style. Not always easy to find though. Lately, I've taken to wearing a single alaskapik on my index finger instead of using a flat pick. Using a 'sort of' frailing style. I have found that to be my most accurate, most versatile style for playing. Also lets me punch through, when required, in group settings.

Joined: August 2005 Posts: 3736 Location: Sunshine State, Australia | I tried to use a thumbpick a few centuries ago. Didn't like it. Then I tried to grow my nails, but the temptation to chew them off was too great. I think I make a fairly passable attempt at fingerpicking, but if I was doing it in a jam, I'd need a little amplification. Otherwise, I adapt my playing and use a flatpicking style. (I think its called flatpicking...)
