Having never been much of a super shallow bowl player, I am not really familiar with the molded cases for them.

But, I am trying to buy a good used hardshell molded case for my Country Artist, which you all know is just a regular shallow bowl. Will the ss bowl case fit the mid-depth guitar? There seem to me more of the ss cases on ebay.

Thanks!

SS will not fit mid
SS was the 9117 case, probably don't offer that anymore, I don't know.

Goober, I'm confused (well, I NORMALLY am, but even more so than usual)....the Country Artist is listed as a mid-bowl guitar on Ovation's website (and I remember it being so as I have seen a couple).....

If the question is whether a shallow-bowl case will fit a mid-bowl guitar, NO, it won't, not enough height. A mid-bowl case will not fit a deep-bowl guitar, either. I just bought a mid-bowl case on eBay, and it won't fit my Applause or CC01.

OAO, I just couldn't remember what the ss cases were like. I had a ss Ovation when they first developed them; but, decided that I was more of an artist/shallow guy. Back then, they didn't have a special case for the ss, if I remember correctly. BTW, most people agree that I'm a really shallow guy. LOL!!

cwk2, he sure could use that case, except I did some swapping....my Melissa Etheridge 12-string had a mid-/deep-bowl case, so I swapped that case over to my Applause(which I bought the case for), and the ME got the new mid-bowl case.....

And the old chipboard case that the Applesauce has lived in since 1977 went to our basement to await its eventual fate.....

For what some of these are going for on ebay, maybe I would be better served if just bought a new one from a discount place?

There seems to be some confusion over bowl/case sizes. The original country Artist had a shallow "Artist bowl", which is deeper than the SS bowls. There have been 5 bowl depths. The shallowest is the current super-shallow. Then there is the old and now discontinued "Artist" shallow bowl. Apart from one or two models the deepest of the current USA Production is the mid-depth which sits between the Artist bowl & deep bowl. Then there's the original deep-bowl and the extra-deep bowl used on the early Adamas both of which are out of production, except for the reissue CL and the Al DiMeola CL. So in terms of depth it's; Super-shallow - Artist - Mid - Deep -original Adamas. The super-shallow cases will only take an SS guitar and nothing else. The mid-depth bowls are a sloppy fit in some deep-bowl cases and those cases are way too big for Artist bowls without a little padding in the lid. I'm pretty sure there was a specific case for the Artist bowls in the '70's, some of which didn't have the tape-covered aluminum rim.

Good analysis, Paul. But to my knowledge, there was not a good case made for the "artist" bowl (ala GC artist) in the good ole days. When flying back then, I always had to pack towels/foam around the regular O cases. And I had an endorsement deal to get the latest stuff back then.

Don't they make a shallow case now?

Goober, link to listing of current cases on Ovation's website:

They say they make "super-shallow" cases. I'd guess from Paul's excellent summary, that if you have the "Artist" bowl Country Artist, you need to get a mid-bowl and pad it for proper fit, just like old times.

". . . So in terms of depth it's; Super-shalow - Artist - Mid - Deep -original Adamas . . ."

I never knew that the early Adamases had a deeper-than-deep bowl (How much deeper?)

I would assume that this held true to the SlotHeads as well (fair assumption, Bill?).

That would explain alot to their sound.

Cliff, there was something to do with the method of attaching the tops to the bowls on the early Adamas which added about 1/4 inch, the Matrix/Meddalion & early Applause also had this depth.

The mid-depth is a whopping 1/8 inch deeper than the original artist bowl.

Interesting about Paul's note of the depth of early Applause.....I need to get out the yardstick and start measuring my guitars.

Just looked at my Applause....the top to bowl binding thickness looks deeper than "usual". Measured it and the binding is around .330"...the binding on the ME 12-string and CC01 is the same at around .175". Maybe THERE is some of the added depth???? (maybe the top and bowl don't touch other than the binding?)

Actually the mtx/med/applesause are the same depth as a deep bowl. The Adamas is slightly deeper since the ring starts at the top of the bowl and rounds up to the plain of the top. The Slutheads were like this too Cliff.

Goober, you had an endorsement at one time? You're not the guy who left to become a pilot are you? Probably easiest to just go buy one unless you like dicking around on the bay in which case go find out what the right model case it is and have at it.

Bill, according to the catalog specs, not that there's any guarantee they are right, the Matrix & Adamas deepbowls are 6 1/16th. The Matrix shallows are specified as 5 9/16ths as opposed to 5 1/8th for the standard artist bowl.
