The truss rod cover looks weird. Not a '97 Collectors' model as the electronics are more basic. I think I want it. LOL!

That IS a strange guitar. It looks like a '97 Collectors' in sunburst with a regular headstock and regular electronics. The case I have seen with the '97's had green interiors, if I remember correctly.

Hmmm....

Ovation made these parlor guitars for a short time soon after the 97 collectors were sold and over with..I think the factory probably had too many bowls and tops left over and decided to make this limited run of parlor guitars..I like the sunburst finish. They had better electronics than the 97 collectors which were a problem for ovation and dealers.A lotof 97's went back to be corrected and sold as refurbished by mars music. They were selling them for $599 with case at the end of 97.

As someone else mentioned a while back, must be like the old Johnny Cash song "I Got It One Piece At A Time". 2002 Collectors headstock and truss rod, Folklore fretboard, 1997 Collectors body, electronics from a 2000 Collectors ...

Samova, What was the issue with the 97 Collectors that sent some back to the factory? One like this sold about 5 month ago, and was commented on by this board. I think the 14th fret fingerboard and nonslot head kind of ruin the orginial thought of a parlor.

Its been a while since i heard the story but i believe they had to make some type of modification to the input jack.It was causing the electronics to not operate..I cant remeber exactly now..All i remember is that Mars music bought a "buttload"(thats more than two in Alabama) of these guitars and sold them for $599 as refurbished...

This guitar appears only once in standard Ovation literature - in the "Ovation Plug It In" catalog dated 12/97 (actually the 1998 catalog). This is not to be confused with the "Ovation Plug It In" catalog (same cover)dated 4/97 that features the 1997 Collector.

The catalog list the following specifications:

Model # - 5741
Bracing - A
Nut Width - 1 11/16"
Scale - 25 1/4"
Bridge - Ebony
Fingerboard - Ebony
Pickup - CP-100
Preamp - OP-24E

The main difference, of course, is the fact that the 1997 Collector is a slothead while the Parlor is not, along with the different preamp and 14 fret neck. Another subtile difference due to the fact that the 1997 Collector has a natural finish, is a AA Sitka Spruce top on the 1997 as opposed to a non-graded top on the Parlor. This could affect the tone somewhat, but not near as much as the difference between the 12-fret neck adn the 14-fret neck.

Incidentally, the guitar pictured in the catalog does not have a trussrod cover.

There's been one or 2 of these on ebay lately. Basicaly it's a '97 Collector with a 14-fret neck, solid headstock & standard electronics.

There was also an Elite-style (PPG8-X) 14-fret parlour-sized Ovation in the '99 catalog, though this was listed with the TS pre-amp. What's even more bizarre is there was a very short-lived Korean Celebrity version of this guitar!

There's one or two catalog guitars with neck-rods but no covers, for example both the 1763-4 & EA63-4 in the '99 catalog should have rod covers, but don't

Bob,

The seller confirms your information. This is what he sent in reply to my inquiry as to model name, number, and preamp:

"It's in the Celebrity line, Model # 5741-9 the pre amp is the OP-24E."

Mystery solved.... but it still leaves it a rare model as the seller claims AND an anomaly in being a Celebrity made in the USA.

It's definately NOT the Celebrity version. Apart from the other details which indicate that this is a USA guitar I'm pretty sure the celeb version was a multi-hole

The guitar has a 5 peice neck so that would make it American built.I have never seen a celebrity with 5 piece neck..Just like the celebrity longneck, viper etc. had one piece mahogany neck while the USA version had 5 piece neck.

When I originally saw this guitar in the catalogs about 6 years ago I thought it was, to be charitable, butt ugly. But seeing the pics of this guitar on eBay, it actually looks quite nice.

There is a 12 fret slothead version out there somewhere that's nice, It's got snow flake inlays and a s/b finish. Only one of that one made.

It was noted above the the 97 collectors does not say what quality of sitka spruce was used. The one I have has a very tight grain about 24 per inch. What does it take to be a AAA?

the quality grade is on the overall appearance of the top all factors considered.
Now over time this will be different since there are different people and most of the grading is relative to what's available.
