Hi,

Looking for some of the knowledge on old Ovation/Adamas/Applause guitars on this board....I found this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3701784141&category=33029

This is complete news to me! A NOS WOOD neck for an Applause???? Just curious if anyone can enlighten me on this....looks like it might be a neat upgrade for my old Applesauce if it is a bolt-on for a AA14.

The USA Applause guitars were basically the Matrix guitars with a different headstock. To the best of my knowledge none of the USA production were offered with wood necks. However towards the end of production the Matrix evolved into the Balladeer Special & then the Ultra. These had an aluminum-framed urelite neck with a rosewood board & lost the black-plastic headstock facing in favour of a headstock which appeared to be wood. It's possible the Applause also went down that road, Bill would know.

These later Urelite necks are convincing enough that on casual inspection most people will think they are wood and it's difficult to tell from the pics. In the pic showing the bolts there is something which may be a neck-rod nut. This would indicate a wooden neck. Best ask some questions or get him to send pics of the body end from a few angles before you commit yourself.

Thanks, Paul T. and cwk2.....you've convinced me that discretion is the better part of valor on this one.....who knows if it will fit????? Too much money to take a chance. LOOKS perfect for a AA14, though.....

How can you tell if an Applause was made in the USA if the only ID is a serial number?

Mike, it should say on the label inside the bowl. Mine says "Made in Moosup, Conn., U.S.A.". I bought it in January, 1977. My understanding is that Applause guitars were made in the U.S. until the early 1980s(from Walter Carter's "History Of The Ovation Guitar" book).

Looking at Carter's book just now, I got another reference on this....says that Applause necks changed to wood after production moved to Korea.....gee, just like cwk2 said!!!!

If ALL you have is a serial number(if the label is not there), I haven't a clue....I've seen no reference anywhere on Applause serial numbers...would like to see one myself.

Thanks Roger, the label is missing I think it was made during the mid 80's. The fret board on my guitar is wood but the neck is not. Serial # 075628
