Hi,

Inquiring minds want to know. What's the best sounding Ovation unplugged? I just picked up a 1778T and can't imagine that it gets a whole lot better. But, does it? I am brand new to Ovation - traded a Gibson Working Man to secure this model, and am convinced that the Ovation is superior in every way. That said, what's the consensus around here? What is the best sounding Ovation - unplugged?

Regards,
Jon Van Gilder

Yes, the 1778T is a nice guitar. And yes, it does get a lot better. You'll get lots of passionate answers to your question. From my own collection I would say Adamas II Slothead, Folklore Deluxe, or '67 Josh White. The early Balladeer and Glen Campbell shiny bowls are also nice. Of the modern day Ovations, the LX Legend and Slothead Reissue are awesome. Dave

Agree with Al on the tex-top Adami. But, comparing an Adamas to a round spruce top Ovation is really like apples and oranges.

I have an early GC Artist that is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever played, especially from a recording perspective. I have used it on hundreds of recording dates, and it has all the clarity and balance of a really old D-18, with that extra Ovation "punch" added. A lot of engineers are of the ilk that Ovations are just not "serious" or "good sounding" guitars. This one always leaves them scratching their heads. Dammit Jim! We get no respect!!

What does BEST mean?

Loudest? Brightest? Biggest Bottom End? Most cut? Most even over the playing range? Good tone when strummed hard? Fingerpicked? ???

We used to go for eveness over the playing range with a pick played medium hard.

Which is the best sounding? Whichever one I happen to be playing at the time. My three favourite Ovations are my Custom Folklore, '78 Adamas & '67 Deluxe Balladeer. They all sound very different, though I wouldn't say that any one was "better" than the other.

The Elite-Ts are great sounding guitars, especialy at their price-pont.

Yep. Best is relative. But I do have great taste and good ears! ;)

.....and a shitload of humility, to boot. LOL!

cwk2's point is right...."best" is what sounds "best" to you....

The "best" I've ever played was the 2003 Folklore Deluxe. Adamas is in there, too, but I've only played current models. The originals by reputation are much better, but I wouldn't know.

Actually ANY Ovation 12-string sounds better to me than any 6-string, but that's ME. :)

"Best" =

My 2001 Collector's Redwood top....

When I brought it home and showed it to my wife, her expression revealed that she thought it looked "funny" (multihole w/ Angel's Wings) :( , but then I played it... her expression changed to that of wonder and she said "wow, that's beautiful! Great tone!" :o

Any guitar that can do that must be one of the best!

I still get those comments whenever I play it!

Thanks again St. Al! :D

Does the slot in the headstock *really* make them sound better? That's amazing! :D

No. Not really.
But there is some belief that the break-angle at the headstock contributes somewhat to their "sound".

I just think that a combination of a lot of different parameters just "fell into place" when these few guitars were made.

It all comes down to "FM".

For 6 strings, my 68 Deluxe Balladeer and 83 1537 Elite. For 12 strings, Big Blue, my 93 Adamas I.

But I've also played Witko's Folklore Deluxe and it may have been one of the best acoustic guitars I've ever played.

And I'm waiting for Ovation to offer the LX configuration that will give the best acoustic sound -- deep bowl (new lighter material), with the LX neck attachment and bracing configuration. From what I can tell (and I hope I'm wrong), the only deep bowl offered with the X bracing is the ADII. And it's got the older bowl and neck attachment arrangement.

C'mon Ovation upgrade the deep bowl model as well. Sell the LX as a great sounding acoustic guitar, not just a great sound Ovation.

I thought about this question a while before I came up with the answer. This might be the answer for many of us.......The best sounding Ovation is MINE!

Just gimme a graphite top and a dozen strings. That's what works for me.
