I realize that value is relative, but is $750 a fair price for this 1983 Elite in excellent condition? I stumbled on one through a musician friend and am trying to decide whether to "bite the bullet" or not.

I've owned dozens of Ovations, but never an Elite. Hmmmmmm......This GAS is killing me!! LOL!

We seem to be bouncing back and forth on different topics. I own a 1537 and they are great guitars. Lately, they've been selling on eBay for $5-$700, so in that regard, you're friend's price is a little high.

However, there are a couple of considerations that make me say buy your 1537. First, when you buy on eBay, you never know for certain what you are getting. Buying your friend's, you know exactly what you are buying. That's worth something right there.

Second, I think that 1537's are underpriced on eBay and will start going up in value. cwk2 commented awhile back that he thinks that they may be the next guitar that collectors go after. I tend to agree. They are truely wonderful instruments. High quality, well made guitars with an eye towards detail. You really can't go wrong with one.

If you really want a 1537, then you should seriously consider pulling the trigger on your friend's.

Thanks again, Paul. I have going back and reading the archives since I found this place, and I see such great things written about this model. Yours really looks nice in the gallery! I am also trying to buy a shiny bowl Deluxe Balladeer and have it restored, if need be. Decisions....decisions!!

BAD GAS!!!

If you get the 1537 you won't have any regrets. The decision to get a shiny bowl Deluxe Balladeer is also a good one. Very different sounds from two great guitars. I know because I own both.

In the next couple of days I'll know if I'm buying a Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer shiny bowl. And later this year, I'm probably going to order a custom made Legend LX. I'm hitting 50 at the end of the year and my wife is giving me some leeway in the guitar buying arena. Besides, it's cheaper than motorcycles, sports cars, boats, and mistresses.

Goober, The '68 GC Shiny Bowl is quite rare. If you find one, consider yourself very lucky. The '68 Deluxe Balladeer is essentially the same guitar, minus the bound fingerboard and diamond shaped inlays. For all practical purposes the two guitars sound identical (I own both). Some will tell you the GC sounds "better", but they are probably listening with their eyes, not their ears. Email me privately if you are interested in buying a shiny bowl Deluxe Balladeer. Dave

Thanks, Dave! I bought my first really nice guitar in 1967, a shiny bowled Deluxe Balladeer. It was one hell of a guitar! But, it was stolen a few years later and never recovered.

I'm aware that the difference between the DB and GC shiny bowls is cosmetic, but the difference is an eye catcher. I have played GC models ever since my shiny bowl DB was stolen.

I don't think that you can find a GC DB. If the gods smile on you, you might catch the sent of one and be able to track it. I've heard that there were only about 50-100 of them made, so they are very rare.

The real problem is being able to afford one after catching the scent. That could be my downfall...

I hear ya, Paul. Carl Jackson, that played with Glen for years, is a pretty good friend of mine. He told me the shiny bowls were really rare....he does not even own one! All of his GC's that I've seen are of the dull back type.

A guy can still dream, eh?

Hey Goober,

Are you a banjo picker too? I saw Carl Jackson on "Live at the Bluebird" on Turner South a few weeks ago and he plays a pretty mean flattop!!
I know he played banjo for Glen for years and he's wrote some hit songs also!
. . . .
Did you and Carl do gigs together?(maybe wih Glen?)
. . . .

A great Hank Snow quote: "I hate banjers and thems that play them!" LOL!

I met Carl when we were both in our teens and he was playing with Jim and Jesse. We ended up traveling and working in the same circles in the '80's.

Carl is receiving great critical acclaim now for producing the new tribute album to the Louvin Brothers. Good for him.....even if he prefers his old Martins.

BTW, I have been to Travelers Rest. I can't remember; is it near Pauley's Island? I'm having a semi-senior moment. Heheh.

"Hey Goober,

Oh, you can bet your dad's favourite five-string he is... :D

Goober,
your semi-senior moment has put you about 200 miles apart! Travelers Rest is in Northern Greenville county almost into N.C.(Hendersonville) and Pawley's Island is on the coast between Charleston & Myrtle Beach! Close!
. . . .
Did you also play with Jim & Jessie?
. . . .
