Although it's yet another "rare" Ovation with a pickguard  what really caught my eye is the strange looking two-tone neck!!(check out the last two pics)
TWO-TONE
.............
Anyone else ever seen this before?

Mike, I think it's just a fuzzy appearance of the 5-piece neck....don't think it's two-tone. At least from what I can see....anyone with sharper eyes got a better idea????

Ovations just do NOT look right with a pickguard!!!!

Roger,

The right side (upper side) definitely appears darker in both pics! Really stands out in the close-up but is also apparent in the long shot!
...........
Probably sat on a guitar stand with it's left side next to a window and it got "sun bleached" :D (maybe the pickguard is covering up some sun fading!!!!!)

That guitar was just here at the Orlando Guitar Show--one of only a small handful of Os there, I might add. I gave it a pretty thorough once over and I don't recall that two tone neck. It must be due to do some funky lighting used when the pictures were taken.

I do recall it looked like somebody tried to paint over (rather poorly) the area where the rubber slip guard would normally go on the bowl. Either that, or someone tried to jury-rig a slip guard and had a horrible glue mishap. In either case, that area of the bowl is pretty badly messed up.

It might be a little two toned, but I think what we're seeing in the pics is the effect of counterset woodgrain. One side is being reflective, while the other is not.

Sometimes when neck blanks are mis matched we end up with orphans. When a neck is made it starts out 2x the size of the neck. They are cut in half. Then we book match it to herringbone the grain. Sometimes we get a load of wood that is not the of the standard legnth and we must match the wood grain to herring bone the grain. I know it looks like ...., but it is still going to work fine.
