On NPRs Fresh Air yesterday, you can listen to it here:

Interview on Fresh Air

Have to admit I was unaware that he is the song writer for "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", "Witchita Lineman", "Galveston", and of course "MacArthur Park"

On some CD there's a b-side R.E.M. live version of "Witchita Lineman"....

Jimmy Webb is maybe one of the finest singwrites in the last 40 years. I would guess that a full 30% of the tunes that I play on a regular basis are his. I caught the interview (my sister alerted me to it, I don't tend to listen to NPR much -- ok, at all) and it's wonderful.

Great interview by Jimmy although I thought the host, Terri Gross(?) was a little biased against Glen! The few times his name was mentioned she quickly shifted the conversation elsewhere!(or so it seemed) And who's idea was it to play that awlful rendition of "Wichita Lineman"
...........
Glen and Jimmy go together and NOBODY does "Wichita Lineman" better that Glen!!!!!

Well, actually, my wife and one of her best friends who used to live across the street prefer me doing Lineman to Glen, but modesty keeps me from bragging too much....

Heard Freedy once in a live radio interview and he did a kickass acoustic version of Elton John's "Rocketman". It's been a staple in our repertoire ever since.

I liked it, too. Also, I think Terry Gross does thoughtful interviews.

Paul,

Yeah I agree that we all have our different taste and I for one am in favor of having eclectic taste in music but some songs become "signature" songs for some artist and it's hard to get use to them being sung anyway else!(althought being "first" to do a song doesn't mean it can't be done "better") I might have been a little harsh on Freely Johnston's verson but it's only because growing up a Glen Campbell fan and hearing Glen sing "Wichita" well over half my lifeIMHO it's become "his" song!(which I know is not true and other artist have recorded it and have done "good" jobs but....)plus I knew a statement like that could intice some "robust" debate! :D :D :D

I heard (not verified), that Wichita Lineman, in all of it's recordings, was the most played song on the radio of the 20th Century.

"Happy Birthday" and "Yesterday." LOL!! I'm serious about the McCartney song being one of them.

ASCAP also has a separate "Most Played Songs" list of songs that they log for writers and publishers. Jimmy is now ASCAP and on the board of directors.

Trboy, I know what you mean about signature songs and that is definatley one of Glen Campbells' signature!!

Seems like there are some songs that have been driven in the ground so much no matter how great I thought they were once-upon-a-time I cringe to hear them. Then there are those songs that I might hear a cover of the song, done a little differently, and think to myself, "What a great song!" and go back to the original and appreciate it all over again...

Several years ago I somewhat quit playing guitar, thinking I was never going to improve and was TIRED of playing those same stupid songs over-and-over.
Ahh, but now, back into playing, and especially hanging out here, and owning some great instruments that are a joy to play, I find some of those good old songs to be fun to play again. Some of the simplest ones can be the best ones.....

I dunno

Reminds me of lyrics by Alan Toussaint, that Jerry Garcia Band covered, from "I'll Take A Melody":

I'll take a melody and see what I can do about it.
I'll take a simple C to G and feel brand new about it.
I understand why the old fisherman sail along, sail along, sail along.
Someday he'll be gone

Now if I can ramble on for 30 more minutes I can leave work and go play my guitar!!

:D

Shhhhh. He's making the big jump from piano to guitar and is going to try to get Dionne W. interesting in recording again.
