Joined: January 2004 Posts: 799 Location: Athens, GA & Gnashville | Actually, the third is an octave higher too; just like the "other" six strings on a twelve string set. Really jangley sound. This tuning was in vogue in Nashville and some in LA in the 60's and 70's, but is rarely used anymore from what I've seen. I think that with the advent of digital recording, acoustic guitar sounds got so bright that the Nashville tuning, or high string guitar, was overkill. BTW, this guitar tuning was almost always used in addition to a regular 6 string. So hell, just use a twelve string!! LOL! | ||

I also use it when backing my buddy Clark Byron. When played live, you can actually add some interesting accents going way up the neck that you can't do with a 12 string or a regularly tuned 6 string. | ||

"So hell, just use a twelve string!!" And since I have two 12-strings, I do!!! I can see it when playing with other people like Paul M. does, though, it gives you a different color to the sound....but playing by myself, it isn't worth it. The Longneck, D scale with heavier gage strings and a two fret drop - has this been attempted in a 12 string? I'm thinking this with a deep bowl would make an awesome rythym section not to mention as a solo instrument. | ||

The fiddle and the banjo lead with multiple guitars backing. I think nashville tuning would add an element of richness without playing in front of the fiddle or banjo. | ||

It seems to me this Longneck 12 would have some serious rumble capability. Even if you kept it in standard tuning (-2) it would absolutely growl. When accompanying instruments in Bb or odd keys I'll have to capo up to be comfortable playing all 3 chords I know. this limits the ability for the "whole" guitar to sing. Dropping two frets would open up alot of possibilities, not to mention exponential GAS problems. | ||

Joined: February 2002 Posts: 5750 Location: Scotland | If I'm recording rhythm guitar I often double the parts with a high-string. It's a great way to make an acoustic rhythm part sit in a mix. For huge-sounding rhythm parts I double track a regular guitar and pan hard left & right, then add a high-string part low in the mix panned centre. I got a super-shallow custom balladeer very cheap on ebay a while ago & that's the guitar I have set up as a high-string. The Tacoma Papoose or a Martin Terz are also useful for doubling rhythm parts. | ||

I might "go missing" if I did the 12 string thing. I thought that maybe I could make things subtlely more interersting if I go Nashville. It's risky...but in a world of Martins, Gibsons and Taylors, they kind of expect the oddball Ovation guy to do something different....that's the beauty of a community as apposed to a band. | ||

We made about 6 and I think Melissa got one of them or so I was told. Don't know where the rest went other than to the Nashville A&R office. These 6 guitars were all Adamas. They are just totally fucking awesome, as you might expect. | ||
