Location: SoCal | There's a 1990's Elite for sale on ebay right now and the seller is saying that it's a vintage guitar. What's vintage (I know, I've hit on this before but I still don't have an answer). Vintage is a term that's tossed around a lot.
I tend to think that my Ovations that were built in the 1960's are vintage, but anything from 1980 on is not.
Thoughts? |

| I would consider a vintage ovation as any first year and/or original model from the 60's; but i imagine we could do an exhaustive word study on the term "vintage", and see it has an original and specific definition limited to wines... |

| By the way, that's the Elite reposted from last week that didn't sell; the descriptions of the guitar are inaccurate; it has a rosewood fretboard, not mahogany, and a 5 piece mahogany/maple neck consisting of 3 pieces mahogany and 2 pieces of maple; i emailed this information to the seller as well...; he sells dulcimers, mandolins, flutes, banjos and guitars on ebay...

Location: Florida | Vintage - any item that you can sell for exhorbitantly more than its useful value because its old.
The word is dramatically overused, to the point that big box retailers are selling "future vintage" models. Gimme a freakin' break.
Case in point - some of the WORST years for Fender were after Leo left (he stuck around there till about 1970, AFTER he sold to CBS). By 72 things were terrible, yet... a 72 Telecaster (like I had once... back in 72) sells for way more than its useful value ought to dictate. Its not as good a guitar as they make today. It its stock, it does not sound as nice - has terrible squealy feedbacky pickups, lots-o-hum, terrible neck finsih - frets and polyrazz-ma-tazz clear coat. You could buy a new 52 Reissue and have a way better guitar. So why is the 52 Reissue about $1100 (except at big box stores where its universally $1250), while that lumpy squeally old Tele - the worst of the worst - going for as much or acutally a bit more?
Ditto my old 79 Strat - which is no longer stock - I've got it where it plays well, sounds ok, but.. why the big bux when a new one is better?
Vintage ought to be "made the old way", or rare, or intrinsically collectable because of some unique property, and... yes, no longer available either.
I'm at a loss for the craze - totally I might add - created by aging BB'er reliving thier adolescent fantasty, but with the clout of buying power. |

All's I know is not to use it, or any derivative of the said word, in the same sentence, or context as the words, or any other words that may refer to, or may be used to describe in any part the entity of the script "my wife" ! :eek:

But seriously... there ought to be some quasi antiquity in "vintage". There ought to be something that stands out, makes the item notable as well as old.
For instance - we can have a vintage manuscript by a noted author, but not a vintage notebook by some highschooler (although the latter most likely has better doodles and erotica). |

| goober, i was wondering when someone would just look it up in the dictionary, duh...each year's wine crop is the 'vintage' for that year; and the opposite of vintage(oldness) is newness; ovation really doesn't have a vintage guitar, compared to martin, for example...

A guitar from the period that it was designed and introduced, i.e. the golden age of that particular model. Pre CBS Fenders, Prewar Martins, the first run of Les Pauls, (1952-60)The McCarty era of Gibson for Firebirds, Vees 335/345/355, explorers etc.
For Ovation this would be maybe the first 10 years of guitars, the ones with fiberglass cloth bowls, not moulded SMC. The Slutheads and early Adamii too. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Actually, "vintage" can mean whatever you WANT it to mean!!!! But to me, it refers to a desirable or interesting type or model of whatever item is up for discussion. To me, "vintage" Ovations are 1111 Balladeers, 1117 Legends, 1115 Pacemakers, etc. from the early to late-1970s. Those are what I find desirable/interesting.
Of course, there are plenty of others, and I won't argue with anyone about it...if YOU find it desirable or interesting, it is VINTAGE to you.
I believe that "Vintage Guitar" magazine selects subjects for articles based on the desirable/interesting criteria, also, from my observation.

At my job I have recently been taken off-line to segue our consolidation as a Corporate Entity. My Team-Building task is to add a fresh perspective to the revisitation of an Econimic Cost Avoidance Mil-Con to consolidate the various Trade skill Designates within our Regional Organization. This streamlining will provide greater synergy amongst the Managerial, Skill Resource and Bargaining Unit participants. A convergance of resources from the traditional paradigm of separatist locationing into one of unity will relieve some of the financial burdens we are currently facing due to the short term perspectives from prior management ideologies and infrastructure initiatives.
And I wasn't issued an oar with this assignment either.
Is it a wonder that I can't wait to come home, read this board, play guitar and kiss my wife? |

SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Lord be with you, I assume you shiver and shake when these spells come upon you. My wife described exactly those types of possession when her mother took her to a Pentecostal church when she was a child. Being blessed like that definately has corporate promise. A room full of budding executives speaking in tongues is a marketer's dream.
