First time I EVER saw one was in a picture in People Magazine in early '76. In the mag was a picture of Glen Campbell and (then) fiance`, Sarah Davis lounging on a couch, and sitting on the other side of him was one of the early proto slotheads. Having never seen one before, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what kind of guitar that was! Obviously, Sarah's long gone, but whatcha wanna bet he still has that geetar? ;)

First time I ever saw one in person was at Ace Music Center in Miami, FL in 1979. They had it behind glass and like northcountry, I had to ask permission to touch it. This was also the occasion where I first met Clark Byron, who is a mutual friend of Paul Moody's and myself.

Unfortunately for me, being left handed, I, to this day, have never actually "played" an Adamas, unless you count strumming a few indiscriminate chords upside down as playing.
:(

Actually I only saw the first multi a few years ago... black/red burst with red/white/black "Angel Wings"...(Elite or Adamas, can't remember) thought it really looked ugly!

I still don't like that color combo... too Gothic for my tastes...

Then, I saw the 2001 Redwood that Al had on his Webstore... didn't know they made such a magnificent creature! We dealt, and now, no matter how many I look at, I can't find a more beautiful guitar (at least to me) anywhere... I'm a real fan of the "dark side" of the wood tops.....

I still dream about a multi with "bound" holes instead of Angel Wings, ebony fretboard, gold tuners, and a dark, 3-D grained wooden top...... and talent enough to justify it! .....please don't tell my wife!

I'm with Jeff. The first multi hole Ovation I ever saw was with Glen Campbell in People Mag. After that I have no clear recollection, but I must have seen them on tv and I know that in about 1980 or so I got the original Adamas catalog from Ovation (which I tossed years later in a move and then bought again for too much money on ebay). When I saw Glen's music show in 1982 and heard an Elite, I was sold. But I think that it was even after that before I ever saw an Adamas and played one.

I still don't think of today's Adamii when I think of Adamas. To me, it will always be the original Adamas.

I remember my first sighting: A color picture of GC in TV Guide playing the infamous blue slut head, promoting a special from Aussie land. It made me very afraid!!!!

(I know this specifically because it is the date on the receipt of the purchase of my CBalladeer).

While I was there, the little old lady that owned the shop showed me the Adamas Slothead (#54). The VERY guitar that I now own.

Funny that this question was posed on the day that it was . . .

. . . I took possession of my SlotHead on my 41st birthday . . . February 24th, 1997.
Seven years ago yesterday.

There is a VERY long and very convoluted story behind this (and I mercifully won't bore you with it here & now) that I'm in the process of writing out for a project that Al is working on.
More to follow at another time.

My first sighting was the airing of the "Glen Campbell Down Under" show Goober mentioned, showing Glen pickin' away on ole #27.

My first Adamas sighting was a picture of Nancy Wilson of Heart playing hers in some magazine in the late 70s....but I hadn't a clue what kind of guitar it was!!!! In fact, I didn't really know what an Adamas was until this summer.....just knew those funny-looking guitars with the weird sound holes had some connection with Ovation....

Of course, I didn't know that Applause had any connection with Ovation until this last summer, either....

I remember seeing Nancy Wilson play one. But I probably saw it on the GC show also. GC and johnny cash were always on in my house I can still hear my dad yelling at me "if you wanna be a guitar player you gotta at least listen to some good ones instead of all the sh*t you listen to all the G*d D*mn time" ....I miss you pop but not all the yellin'

My Dad's comment was "listening to all that Hippy Shit" I he always liked Folk music Good stuff, just not quite my style. Miss him too he did buy me my second guitar, after he heard me trying to play the peice of Crap I bought for $10. I learned to play by going through every Niel Young song I heard. Still like his stuff if not the man?.... Then on to the good stuff and The electrics Yes and the Band thing etc. etc.
I remember That photo of Nancy Wilson! She was kinda good lookin but that ADAMAS Now that was beauty!

1976 Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Heart was the warm up band for a Renaissance concert. Nancy played her slothead on stage and I asked myself "WTF is THAT???". I have a photo someplace that I took at that show. As soon as I find it I'll post it. BTW, Michael Dunford played two GC 12 strings and a 6 string Legend. Steve Fossen played a Viper 6 string and a Preacher 12. It was a pretty good night for Ovations on stage in New Jersey. Dave

Yeah Al I have to admit my Brother got the brunt of it most of the time He was 5 years older and I started hangin around in his room listening to the Grass Roots, The Who Quadraphenia, Yes, Zep, and Etc. Etc. Etc.It was a little over my head then. He was always yelling about the noise! "Turn That Hippy Shit Down! Guess he was a little happier When I got into Neil Young stuff. He just never understood some music just don't get good till you hit 9 or 10 on the volume knob. I've got two wonderful girls now 8 & 11 and I have been waiting for them to start with the britteny crap? Guess what! That old hippy shit must have been pretty good I am buying dups of most of my CD's! Their favorite is Talk by Yes! and I don't mind it when they crank it! keeping my finger crossed! Randy

this reminds me of a funny story
The Grass Roots reminded me of this
I was writing down songs that my band in jr high should learn. so I wrote Midnight confession on a piece of paper.
My mom saw it on my desk and concerned for my safety (we lived in the city aka ghetto) suggested I should find a different time to go to confession. I told her it was a song and she breathed a sigh of relief.
