Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I just got one of these APHEX acoustic exciter pedals...only got to mess around with it a little last night, but DAMN! Really good punch to the overall sound of ALL my acoustics (not just my O's). I have yet to fine tune the settings, but this thing is sweet.

What's nice is that it acts like 2 different pedals...big bottom allows you to adjust the bottom end alone, while the Aural Exciter adds to the top end. You can blend each separately and really customize the overtones of your sound (lost in electrifying the signal) without actually changing the natural sound of the guitar.
The info in the package is really informative (I'm surprised they don't explain more on the web site), and describes how it is not just an exciter, and does not merely increase input volume. It is actually designed to add punch to your sound without overloading your system/amp or damaging speakers.
I have yet to try it a higher volumes, but so far I'm digging it. Since I play rock music solo, I like a full sound with a thumpy bottom end, and this kicks ass! But even the high end sounds warmer with more sustain, yet without losing crispness-soloing the notes sound meatier. I recommend checking one out at a store.

Location: Netherlands | I like that aural exciters are available as a stompbox now. Until now they were only available in 19" versions, afaik. When recording I use a BBE Sonic Maximizer, which enhances the sound pretty good.
Does it add compression?

Location: Scotland | Aphex do a matching compressor pedal called the Punch Factory. I got one at NAMM, very impressed with it. The cool thing about these Aphex pedal is they all have a balanced output, so they double as active DI boxes |

Location: Scotland | A direct-inject(DI) box converts hi-impedance unbalanced instrument signals tolo-impedance mic-level balanced lines so they can be used with pro-audio equipment such as mixing consoles, and allow long cable runs without signal degradation or noise. Active direct boxes use an Op-amp circuit to convert the signals and need a power supply, passive direct boxes use a transformer and don't need a power supply. |
