I have ebony buttons on my SMT, Custom Folklore & UK11. Except fot the guitars with chrome buttons most of the others have pearloid. This is partially to do with appearance but mostly because my rancid sweat rots through gold plating in no time.

Your Honor (and anyone else posting pics):

A good "rule of thumb" is before you post the pic, resize it to a maximum WIDTH of 500 pixels or less (PhotoShop will allow you do do this).

btw: I prefer the gold.

After reading through the thread and checking the official site on what model has what tuners. Noticed that my Legend has chrome machines, allthough the officiel site lists my model comes with the gold tuners. I guess it depends on the finish, my logo is silver, too. I like the chrome ones. I like the pearloid on the 12-strings....

Tony, on your older Ovations are you looking at the screw that holds the button to the key, not the screw in back of the headstock that secures the tuning key to the peghead. These are phillips screws. The screws that hold the button to the key are a sloted screw on schaller keys.

I put a set of pearloids from StewMac on my 2000 Collectors. The buttons are identical in size, bore, etc to the gold ones that came off. They fit perfectly, with no issues. I used the gold screws that were originaly on the guitar since the ones that came from StewMac were silver.

With all due respect, you've really got to see the entire guitar to appreciate the look of the the Pearloids. With the fretboard and top binding, the pearloids complete the look (IMHO).

I think you should alternate, one gold, one pearloid. Or better yet, cut them in half and put gold on one side and pearl on the other.

:)

hehe ... I actually did the alternating thing while installing them just for yucks. I gave up after hurting my brain trying to decide which side of the headstock looked better with the solo gold button.

OK... so I know I screwed up and bought Schaller buttons for my Pings, but the bottom line is, since they fit, I can use them, right?

I'll be at the OFC Tour... I'll be the guy in the corner of the hotel lobby singing "Dazed and Confused..."

I'm leaving mine on, yer Judgeship, since they look good and they work just fine.

What gets me, is that I looked really carefully at my older O with Shallers and compared the 2000 with them. Outside of the Ovation icon vs the Shaller icon, they appear identical. Did Shaller lose the rights to their own IP, did they just never protect their design, is Ping hoping Shaller doesn't notice, did they license the design?

I had been considering putting gold (or chrome) buttons on my Legend 12-string, but keeping the pearloid buttons on just the "harmony" strings to facilitate quick tuning changes "on the fly" and not have to momentarily "study" the keys to decide which one to turn.
