Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA | Many moons ago playing live, I used a Lawrence Sound Hole Pickup on my 1127-4. Don't remember the Model #...don't know where it is anymore...dag nabbit!
I want to get a new Pickup...preferably a Sound Hole.
My Producer has recommended a Fishman Rare Earth.
What do ya'll suggest in your experience and humble opinion is the best overall sounding Pickup for Ovations I can get on the market today for my 1127-4?
Secondly...I have been using D'Addario J16 Phospher Bronze/Light Strings for years now on my 1127-4.
They sound great but I was curious what ya'll think.
Any suggestions about a potentially better sounding set of strings for my Ovation?

Location: NJ | Don't know about soundhole pickups (don't use 'em) but you won't get a better recommendation on the strings from me, 'cause you're using the exact same ones I've been using for years. |

Location: Upper Left USA | I found my old Lawrence sound hole pickup while doing some pre-pre-spring cleaning. Have these gone the way of 45's or are they still "OK"?

Cliff...duh on me bro...you see...mine does not have that ability...no electronics...so I don't even think with that data...plugging in that is.
It has always been Mics & Pickups for me in the Studio and Live.
BTW...nice Jersey Style response!

That's what I loved about it.
Hmmm...sounds a little nasty! :D
I'd love to know if the new generation of Lawrences are still as sexy as in the '70s. |

Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | I use a Lawrence soundholew/volume control in my 1117 Legend. I added a lapel mic clipped to the inside bracing. Sounds good for little money.
Iagree with your string selection, except I like mediums. Martin Phos.B. SP's are verrrrry nice too!

Maybe Vicky never really did it for you because she wouldn't do it with you! :(
Norseman...good to hear someone is still actively using the "Vicky" Lawrence.
As for the strings...my Producer suggested that I switch to the Martins.Phos.Bs. I'll have to try them out now. I still like the Lights...just that much easier to bend for lead work...and easier on the fingers...for me at least.
When you said Lapel Mic...you mean a Lavalier? |

Location: Scotland | The Rare Earth pickups were originally called Mimesis. They were designed in Scotland by Mike Vanden who licensed them to Fishman. I have a couple of them, they are among the best soundhole magnetics on the market. The Sunrise is better, in fact it's absolutely the best magnetic available, but it's a lot more expensive. I heard the new Baggs magnetic at NAMM & was impressed enough that I'm going to buy one when I'm in the USA in a couple of weeks.

The trick with magnetic pickups is to use nickel strings, regardless of any claims by the manufacturer that the pickup will work with bronze
strings. I prefer piezo's for regular guitar, but for slide I always use a magnetic. |

Location: Seattle | Played the Baggs M-1 at Namm. Without a doubt the most amazing sound-hole pickup I've ever played. It actually picks up sound from the top. Don't know how... but it does and without feedback. If it's not on the market yet it soon will be. |
