i have been shopping at guitarden.com and am looking at 2 guitar an ovation legend 1111-4 and a ovation CS-257 they are both goingfor 350 i love the ovation sound and am wondering wichisa better guitar intearms of sound and build quolity |

Get it for $350? Get the right to return it too if you're not pleased, or if its not as represented. |

Location: Florida | Wait a second... the 1111-4 is a deep bowl Balladeer, not a Legend. Keep in mind this is a more classic model. No cutaway. Very nice quality, and if in good shape is probably going to sound much better than the CS257 (acoustically). The 1111-4 Balladeer has no pickup. Its acoustic only with one central soundhole.
The CS257 is super shallow bowl, electric, cutaway with epaulet multiple soundholes.
I'll give you the benefit of doubt here... but on any other board I'd say this is a troll post. |

Location: Shelton, Washington, USA | charlie, it's a valid post... i responded to it over on guitarists.net... my response was virtually identical to yours. the poster currently has an applesauce and is looking to upgrade.... he never did say if he was going to be predominantly plugged or unplugged... but he plays electric, as well, so i'm guessing there will be some plugged in time... the 257 might be the way to go, even though i believe the 1111 is a much better guitar. |

Location: St. Petersburg, FL USA | My "member #" compels me to pipe up & agree with you guys. The 1111 obviously is a Standard Balladeer, no electronics. Great low end sound, mr bro-in-law has one. Interesting that I can't find a model "1317," though. Could this actually be a 1517, which would also mean that it has a pickup, although you can't tell from the photo on GuitarDen whether the electronics are there, and also don't you think they would mention it if it were there? The inlays seem to be wrong for the 1312, which is the other "close match" in the Ultra series to that model #. Is there a 1317 that isn't mentioned on Ovation's website? |

An older non-electric Balladeer, which if in good shape and not needing a refret or such, would be a damn nice guitar.
Or
A newer Celebrity, electric with shallow bowl (not the greatest for acoustic tone). Presumably newer in better shape.
I'd be very leery of wear, neck angle, neck twist, and top rise on any older guitar, Ovation or not. So... the same advice holds true, Ovation or not. That is: if you dont know how to check for such things, get full return privs. Then have the guitar checked by somebody who knows what to look for, and in this case, somebody familiar with Ovations.
And welcome aboard Fluff... tell us more about yerself sometime. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | This is a no brainer. Buy the 1111, as long as it doesn't need a lot of work. If it does, keep looking until you find one in better shape. There are at least a dozen nice older acoustics on ebay right now, (1111, 1122, 1121, 1117 and 1127). Stay away from the shallow celeb, unless all you care about is a plugged in electric guitar for stage work. Dave |

Here is my dos centavos (not much at today's exchange rate), unless you are buying a guitar for playing in bars and drunken parties, which I have played many, a nice sounding, quality acoustic (1111) will give you great pleasure for many years. Vicey versey, if you want a plywood topped, shallow bowl, indestructable guitar that can only be plugged in (and can double for a baseball bat in a bar fight), go for the Celeb. I always had cheap plywood guitars for the bars and parties, but my great sounding acoustic was my solace when I wanted to enjoy a little pickin' at home for inspiration and a reminder of why I play guitar to begin with. But I wouldn't take it on a gig any more than I would my first virginal high school beauty that I "loved", at least I thought she was virginal.

Location: St. Petersburg, FL USA | That guitar selling on eBay is the exact model & finish I have (mine is an '83, love it). "Buy it now" for $325. Sounds great to me. It WILL plug in & it WILL be superior to the Celibacy. And, it's 33 years old. Ooohhhh. Nice spot, Dave. Now can I be right like everyone else??? My wife never lets me be right! :D |
