Joined: September 2008 Posts: 757 Location: Melbourne Australia | I am in a bit of a dilemma - I've got a 1621-1 and an LX 6756 12 string as well as a couple of other low-end acoustics and a Cort 12 string and now see there is a someone selling the following at a reasonable price (for Oz) i) 1985 USA Manufactured Ovation Ultra Acoustic/Electric Guitar Model 1517; and a ii) 1984 USA Manufactured Ovation Classic Electric/Acoustic Cutaway (couldn't make out the model but Precurser to 1773LX model with an earlier OP pre-amp) So... should I keep my money and look for a more upmarket Ovation 'something' or consider these (and possibly sell a couple of my others?

They might say "Made in USA" on the Bowl, but that is cuz the Bowl is made in the USA. Not the guitar. (correct me if I am wrong) And the Ovation Website still sez that it definitely has a Laminate Top. That said, I had an Ultra 1312 pure acoustic... It was an OK guitar. But Before you spend a whole lot on an Ultra, do some research. But if it is cheap, looks and sounds nice... You Know.

These are down in Tas so would be buying over the net and wouldn't get a chance to hear them. Given what you say about laminate and USA built, I might be able to drive him down - he is selling them for about AU$2200 + shipping and insurance. Unfortunately you pay a premium down here as there are not too many for sale. http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?s=0712b4ebfd... Cheers Chris

MSRP on them when they were new was around $600 in the 80's. And they probably sold for less than that in reality. Also, AU $1200 translates to $807 US... For that much you could probably get a New Ultra, bought an shipped to you through a Real Dealer. I do wish you the best of luck on your search though... And I feel for all y'all who gotta pay tariffs and 'value added' and all that.

Possibly look at one of the better ones for sale from OFC club members and then ship. Unfortunately a trip to the US isn't on the cards at the moment - we will leave that to Richard. Even with the weak Aussie dollar and expensive shipping, you can do much better than that. Just be patient. Leave it alone is my advice. Don't be in a hurry to depart with your money. Something better will come along. It's not like you NEED another guitar.

I went in to the Acoustic Centre yesterday to see what they had 2nd hand - a big fat 0. He said Ovations are really slow movers and they will only take them on trade in, so I gave him my details and asked them to call me if they do get something. I just find my 1621-1 1 11/16" nut just a frag too narrow and was after something a tad wider like the Taylor I have

Time I fessed up - besides what appears in my signature I also have a Tanglewood TW28 STR-CE, Cort AJ870/12, an old Riviera I rescued and put new strings on and a Yamaha Classical I was given. Oh and a Samik Fender Strat copy and 20w amp that cost me $60. Not all are known about and are kept 'away'. The Tanglewood may be going to the son of a girl I work with.

There are a lot of O's available on the Bay in the USA, plus some of us here on the OFC trying to sell. Maybe there is a cheaper way to get O's to Oz. I've got a very nice 6778LX that I'd let go for a reasonable price and would ship to an OFC member in Oz. I'm sure someone stateside would help out if there is another model that you want shipped over.
