I have the opportunity to trade in my 1867 Legend for a 1777 LX. I am torn. I would appreciate any feed back or comments anyone can provide. Thank you.

I have a new natural color Legend LX. I cannot say enough good things about this guitar. The sound is loud and full, but very warm, just beautiful. It is very light, and really nice to play standing up. The rosette is really nice looking, and the quality is first rate. This is the best Ovation guitar I have owned, and the more I play it, the more I love it. Go get the Legend LX, and you will see what I mean. A truly awesome guitar.

I forgot the mention the OP-PRO preamp is very easy to use. The tuner is excellent, and the plugged in tone I get sounds very nice. Go get this guitar! :D :D :D

Love my 1778 LX.

I also love my old Guild D50 and my Applause AA12.

Is there any way possible to keep them both? :(

Grizz, the 1867 is a super-shallow bowl. I think I would approach the decision as to whether you need a shallow-bowl or a mid-bowl guitar. Don't get carried away with LX-mania. If you need the deeper, richer unplugged sound of a mid-bowl, then go for it. If not, I'd keep what you have, it is a very nice guitar.

Could be a tough choice. Hmmmm ... Let' see ... better neck, better electronics, better bowl, better top bracing. Sounds like you better flip a coin. Seriously - if it were me, the only reason to keep the 1867 would be if you absolutely had to have a super shallow bowl for whatever reason. Is this a straight trade 1867 for 1777LX ??? That would be an incredible deal. If not, you may want to consider selling your 1867 first and then get the LX. The 1867 and 1869 are in high demand with Guitar Craft students. I was almost amazed what I got when I sold a 1867 last year. Put it on eBay and put "Guitar Craft" in the description. You should get $600-700 for it. Dave

It all depends on what you are looking for in sound. I just bought a new 1777LX. It is a mid depth bowl, with a lighter material. This gives it a louder balanced sound, without plugging it in. The LX bracing contributes to the superior sound. Ovation came up with a real winner on this design. I am very pleased with it, as I own some great acoustics, both vintage and new, I can honestly say the LX is the way to go.

Thank you everybody for their opinion. It will be a tough choice to make. The trade is not straight across. I will have to pay $50, which is not a problem. For curiosity sake what is “Guitar Craft”? Thank you again to everyone that has responded.

Griz:

Unless you are playing at auditorium levels and need the feedback contol of a supershallow bowl, you should definitely make the swap. The LX is a much better guitar than the the 1867.

This sounds like it depends how much you like your 1867. It seems odd to me that a guitar like the 1867 with a new street value just less than a new 1777 lx could possibly be traded as a used guitar (with $50) to get the 1778 lx new. I have a 1778 lx and love it, but it's not the end all to guitars the way the lx series is getting a little over-hyped on this board (The Adamas cvt sounds better to me I just don't think I want to pluck down the extra $500 or so for one). However, the Lx enthusiasm is not even in the same realm of oversell as the incredible overstated hype for Seagull guitars constantly stated on another site that shall remain nameless.
On my 1778 lx, the electronics are great and the unplugged sound is more complex with deeper bass than my shallow bowl 1861 balladeer. Yet, I have no burning desire to get rid of the shallow bowl (although I may because I want a 12 string and I already have four 6 string guitars so it's either my 1861 or my Martin d-15). Good luck with your choice.

I don't think it's odd in the least. Ovation has always been very good about keeping the prices of it's guitars down. In fact, to buy a Snaylor that's comparable in value to a Legend LX, you'd have to spend twice the money.

It's easy to understand why people here are so excited about the LX's. And it is the same reason people who buy Seagulls are so excited about their guitars. In both cases, the value of the guitar you get, for the money you spend is just incredible. Unlike Martins, Gibsons, Taylors, etc, where you pay extra for the name.

In terms of workmanship, quality of sound, both plugged and unplugged, and just plain value, I'd put an LX up against any $2000 guitar from one of the companies listed above.

That's why people are excited.

I'd put my NON-LX 1777 up against any $2000 guitar from the companies listed above.....Ovation already did make a darn good guitar....if the LX is better, then it makes it a slam dunk.

Here is my 2 cents. Late in the game but I just got off work... I like having the SS bowl and a mid bowl. I play both often. If it were me, I would not trade in Faith. Buy the LX and keep both for a while. If in time you decide you don't need both then sell her...

Gentlemen, I think my Elite Lx is an outstanding value and a fine guitar for the money. I think you took my point the wrong way. I was just trying to point out as old applause stated that Ovation made some sweet guitars before the lx series. I don't believe it's an automatic trade your old Ovation for an LX. I think WE are all excited about the changes because Ovation has decided to raise their game in the competitive market.

That said, I'd like to see some non-ovation board members stating the same idea that many of us feel. Acoustic Guitar Magazine, who has given good reviews in the past to the 1861 balladeer and the Adamas SMT, gave the Lx Legend a good review but did not go over the wall on it.

I would put up my Elite lx against just about anything in and around $1000 because I have tried so many guitars.

In the situation stated, the store is willing to give a legend LX $950-$999 street value to someone for $50 + an 1867 used (perhaps $500-700 used). Doesn't that sound odd that they'd give at least 900 credit on a used guitar that might get $700??? It's not a slam against Ovation (they're my favorite!). It just seems odd.

As far as putting up my LX against $2000 guitars? I'd have to play them off against each other in a store. I did play off an Adamas cvt against guitars in the 2000 range in a store and it competed pretty well, However, the CVT was listed on sale for about $1600. $2000 is only $400 more, not double. Perhaps you do pay more for the Martin, Taylor, and Gibson name but they do make many fine guitars. I think we'd all like to see Ovation get their recognition.

Moody, as far as Ovation keeping prices down..... they keep the prices at the highest point possible where they can keep them selling (as does every business). If they could get people to buy an Lx at 1500, that would be the street price with the list price being about 30% higher. Don't think I'm downgrading the LX, I think once people have played them, once stores carry them... they indeed will be selling fast. As far as unplugged sound, plugged sound, electronics, playability, and beauty the Lx line is a winner. That's why I own one. In fact, I'm putting off my 12 string purchase until lxs come out in 12 string, then I'll play the Taks, Seagulls, Martins, etc... and see who wins. For $1000 bucks in the 6 string market, the Elite lx wins for me.

I totally agree, it is NOT automatic to dispose of your 1867. My point, as I made earlier, is that your sound need should dictate what you should do. If you found a 1777 NON-LX that met your needs, I would go for it. The LX series does not automatically make the past series guitars junk.

Acoustic Guitar magazine does not like Ovation. I've only read it for 8 or 9 months and it is quite obvious. "If it ain't wood, it's no good".

That rather bothers me about the trade-in, also...that is an AWFULLY good value on the trade-in!!!! Maybe they have somebody who is willing to pay a premium for a used shallow-bowl???? Anyway, it's good for you.

Just to let everyone know...I went with the LX. To clarify on the trade-in, I purchased the 1867 from Musicians Friends and I am within my 45 day return period. I noticed the 1777lx after the fact so I tried the 1867. So the difference in price is $50 to what I purchased it for. I am looking forward to the 1777 LX. Thank you for your help.

Sounds familiar! I bought a premium Celebrity from M123 and sent it back for the 1778LX.

Major upgrade, love the guitar!

Grizz, wise choice. I have never had so much fun playing as I am having now with my Legend LX. I told Kim Keller that on the phone today. When you get yours, sit down and just play the thing. You will know what I am talking about right away. :D

Now it's making sense! Actually I had bought the 2003 collector's edition, sent it back, waited for the LXs to come out and then bought the 1778 lx. The collector's edition was very nice, but I'm happy with the Lx. Grizz, you've never stated your impressions of the 1867. What did you think? Good luck on the LX.
