Location: Waurika OK | I like to listen to music while reading OFC posts and other net surfing. But I get tired of regular radio and even my favorite CD's.
I decided to try some internet radio and found a station I like: Onion River Radio
www. onionriverradio.com it comes out of Vermont.
It's Free!
They play a mix of classic rock, blues, singer-songwriter, new music.

Three local radio stations here just changed formats simultaneously (Clear Channel, I think...). Now they all *&%#ing stink. (excuse my French). Would love to find some online sources that play some newer stuff, as well. Like GooGoo Dolls, 3rd Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty, to name a few.
I remember this one site where you could set up your own "station" and you would rate the songs ona scale of 1-10, and the more you listened & rated, the better it got. They would throw songs in by artists in similar styles to the ones you liked a lot, pretty cool. I can't remember the name of the site. Google's not helping either. If I figure it out, I'll post back. |

I haven't checked it out yet, but my partner was telling me at our gig Sat. night about an Internet station he listens to called 365live.com

You can also access it through the Radio Tuner button in Windows Media Player.
Takes me back to the AOR (Album Oriented Rock) FM Radio DAZE of me youth! Now THOSE were the days of GREAT Radio!

On the website it is described as an Onion River Radio Player Desktop Shortcut...hmmm...
Read the Privacy Policy...sounds and smells like potential Spyware/Adware to me.
Could also just be a proprietary piece of player software that facilitates the webcast stream.
OK...I downloaded it, right clicked, and looked at the Properties...and it is the Onion River Radio Player, Abacast version 1.1. Still...me thinks they are collecting personal data like listening habits and whatever else they can get their hands on for marketing research. |

When you use it, it P2P's OUTBOUND to other listeners to increase the overall bandwidth available. In other words - say you get a 64kbps inbound stream. That stream goes back out at about 32kbps (on port 4000 for those interested).
I'm still looking at the stream to see what else is in there. |

Location: uconn | After having a look and calling the station, i can assure you the .exe file is spyware. AdAware from lavasoft quarentined it immediately!!

Location: Waurika OK | I also looked at 365live, they wanted you to register, get a password, etc. They seem to have a much broader range, for instance you can get an all blues format with diff. blues styles. I already have more pass words than I can keep up with, (for me that is about 4).
The loss of our personal privacy is apalling and I gripe about it often. Yet the more technology we have the greater the problem is going to get.
If anyone finds out anything bad about Onion River Radio, let us all know.

I use Adaware also, but don't know much about it. My question is; once it quarantines (sp) something, does that take care of that site from then on or does it just come back?

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Unless you run the Ad-Watch option which is available in the registered (pay for it) version, it will just get rid of each occurance. If you go back to a site that drops turds on your machine, you must remove them again.
I recommend running AdAware once a month, which is plenty for most folks. The Ad-Watch opton is a little overkill unless you are doing some serious surfing on shopping sites and/or adult sites as those are the largest offenders. |

But I think - and will be testing this later - that Zone Alarm will squash any outbound form this.

Location: Florida | What I'm finding is the outbound is variable speed and number of connections - depending on my inbound rate.
It seems like they'll stream you as much as you can handle in what seems like 48k chunks of bandwidth, and outbound seems the same - all in 48k chunks. It's buffered so it seems to vary a little in actual speed, but thats more or less it.
Having played a bit more with Abacast...
At times - I've had 512kbps coming in listening or ORR, and 350kbps outbound. Looking at my connection log, it seems I was hosting six outbound streams all on UDP port 4000.
Needless to say thats a whole boatload of bandwidth used. I'm hoping ZA will squash it |
