I had a great seat about 10 ft. from Al playing his "new" ADM II. I didn't know much about AL. I have one CD and it's OK...
I was blown away. He has been "running" hard with this clinic and showed up late from Chicago... Traffic.
This was an OFC members dream night. I took some pics and will have them at the tour next week.
50% Q & A, 50% playing like I've never heard. In front of "serious" music students from Berkely school of music in Boston. Al is a grad of Berkely... Talked about his "old" days. "I've been playing sice I was 8 and I will be 50 soon, I guess that's 42 years, wow".
The first question... It was an under hand slow pitch from, OK it was me,
"Tell us about the guitar?"
He did rave about "His" toy. Al does have an "East Coast" edge. An NYC boy, with a little chip... That said, he can talk the talk and walk...
I've never met "Sam" on the board, but I know you are a big fan of Al's... I could only think about how much of a kick you would have had in my seat.
For that matter, this was an OFC members very cool night.
Oh, one last thing. Paul T., they needed you bad.
Al had his tech man running with his hair on fire all night. The "3 sounds" that Al brought along... He struggled with.
Al, was pissed all night. I know he took more questions because of the tech challenges. Everyone was sweating for the poor bastard who was changing boards at Al's feet as he talked.
This was a very good night.

Location: Minden, Nebraska | I wasn't able to attend the Omaha clinic because of a scheduling conflict I couldn't escape. Bummer...
In the spirit of reminiscing, I was a big fan of Chick Corea's Return to Forever band in the early '70s. It was a big thing when Stanley Clarke switched to an electric bass. It was even more amazing when the band dropped the reeds and vocals (Flora Purim went to prison for drug charges, if I remember right) and added an electric player named Bill Connors.
Billy was a smokin' player, but after two projects left the band to study classical guitar. Huh? We watched with wonder, waiting to see who would fill those shoes. It was a young relatively unknown named Al Dimeola.
Suffice it to say he didn't remain unknown very long. Since then, he has blossomed and expanded and become the kind of musician TRULY worthy of having a signature model guitar named for him.
Please forgive the ramble. I think we reminisce more when we get older.... like me. |

I saw Return To Forever (RTF) live at Shippensburg State University in PA (which was down the Pike from my College) in the mid '70s...probably '74.
I was right up front and center with my arms on the stage. SMOKIN'...Chick, Stanley, Al, Lenny...they were on FIRE! What a Band! Jazz Rock Fusion cranked to 11! I can't say enough about how tight these guys were!

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska | The Omaha clinic (premier 3/10) was spectacular. Sound & tech went well, a crowd of about 450+ very engaged enthusiasts hung on his every word as he talked for about 75% of the 2-1/2 hours he was there. (Dietze Music offered this with no admission charge.)
Some stuning playing (duh!!) and great stories made for a great evening. It was a stellar night, and if there was any downside, it was that it set the bar pretty high for the rest of his clinics on the tour. |
