Location: Louisville, OH 44641 | Ever try one an Ebow (not Ebay...Ebow)? I think they look interesting. Do they work on acoustic guitars?

Hold it next to the strings. It vibrates the string, you just fret the notes with your left hand. Was real popular in the 80's, gives sortofa slide sound, without sliding. Used to use one on "Love Hurts" with a slide sometimes. BOC uses one on Don't Fear the Reaper, at the end of the guitar solo a single note comes up and holds for about 10 bars, that's an eBow. Takes a little "technique" to get the hang of.

Location: Scotland | As far as I'm aware they interact with magnetic pickups only and do not work with acoustics or with piezos. I've had one for 20-odd years, hardly ever use it. Nice with slide and lap steel, great for emulating bagpipes. Quite tricky to use. |

Location: NW Washington State | I've had one for 20 years too, it's in a box somewhere. Fun but would take patience to master. I vaguely remember that it interacts with the strings and actually drives the string to vibrate more/longer. Been a while though. It might have less effect on bronze strings than on steel or nickel.
Jim, if I can find mine without too much looking, I'll loan it to you to tinker with.

Location: Louisville, OH 44641 | Crap. Steve your offer is about 15 minutes too late. I just bought one from Musicians Friend. It looked like something that could be a lot of fun. I'm really not very good on guitar yet and part of the reason is that I keep taking side roads (like this Ebow thing). Based on my history, I'll use it a lot for about 6 months until I get almost good and then pack it away for 20 years and finally sell it for $10. |
