Since I'm having trouble finding any high-end Ovation or Adamas guitars to demo, I was wondering if any of you had any mp3s you could post that would demonstrate the tonal differences between the Carbon-topped and wood-topped models? I'm particularly interested in the Adamas CVT.

Thanks in advance, and I wish all who are making the trip to CT a safe journey and a good time.

Steve, I haven't the recording equipment to meet your request. I can tell you what I have heard, since I have a CVT 12-string and a new Legend 6-string, and have played CVT 6-strings and wood-top 12-strings.

The CVT has a more even, defined sound than a wood-top guitar. The wood-top guitars seem to have more variation, more unevenness, but more character. My opinion.

Actually, you should listen to songs by artists using these guitars.....any Melissa Etheridge music with her playing an acoustic is a CVT 6- or 12-string. I would presume that some of Al DiMeola's acoustic music is his Custom Legend 6-string. All of the music on Kaki King's CD is played on an Adamas, I believe a CVT.

If you can rent Heart's "Alive In Seattle", Nancy Wilson plays a Legend 12-string on one song. She and Ann both play the same 12-string on "The Road Home" also.

I just got an Adamas SMT. I got to play a Balladeer (nonLX) a few Legends and a Custom Legend before I got this one. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to play side by side. If they were speakers, I'd say the Legends were like Celestion Vintage 30's, while the SMT was like a JBL D120. Back to comparing wood to carbon, I'd say the wood has more mids, less highs, and perhaps more boomy bottom. The SMT seems to have a more even volume string for string and fret for fret... all over the neck.

thanks for the replies... I was kind of thinking that the case would be for the Carbon Fiber to be more balanced, and thats what I'm looking for. What about overtones? Do you think that the Carbon produces the same type of overtones as wood?

Thanks again for your help...

In the top end, yes, and even moreso than wood to some extent. In the bottom end, I think the wood tops can be a bit boomier.

If you look at my 'popcritic' photo album, you will see the guitar my daughter Kaki used for her first cd. The pic is "November 2002 at Northhampton".

This was a 1986 Adamas II 1581-7, single epaulet, deep bowl, cutaway, two knob (but wired for stereo with both output jacks), glossy finish neck and headstock. It had been my guitar but I gave it to her in 1995 when she was entering high school. The guitar was lost in a burglary in Dec. 2002.

IMHO, I have never heard its overall tone equaled or surpassed.

Dave, You must be very proud of Kaki. I haven't purchased her CD yet,(it's on my "to do" list)but I did catch her on "Late Night with Conan..." She's an awesome talent, and I can't wait to see how she developes as an artist.

What part of Atlanta are you in? I moved here from Duluth in September. I don't miss the traffic.
