Before I came across the OFC, I was just a clueless guy down in steerage on the ocean liner of life, unable to see very far ahead. Now I have made some friends up in the pilot house who can see the horizon.
I have waited for the arrival of the LX. My e-bay fund project is going quite well. Now I hear from the pilot house that a deep bowl for the LX might be kinda close.
My trigger finger is starting to itch. But I am a patient man. A couple more months would not kill me.
When is the summer NAMM?

Brad, if you find an Ovation you like the sound of, and it fits your budget, I'd go for it. One can keep waiting and waiting for the next big thing, and never get anything.

I haven't even seen a mid-bowl Legend LX anywhere and it has been over 2 months since winter NAMM. How long do you think it would take to see a deep-bowl LX after summer NAMM if it is introduced there??? Might be October or so before you can play one.

It sounds like I may have one of the last non-LX Legends, and you know what???....I DON'T CARE. It sounds wonderful and I like it. I'm not sorry I didn't wait. :)

How hard is it to get a NAMM "pass"?
Do they charge by the day or total show?

It does sound like it is the "true" candy store.

Skip, that wasn't steerage, it was the bilge.

Your situation is the dread of todays consumerism. You name the product, and in a short time, a new improved whammy-wizbang version will be out. Either that or they go retrospective on ya and recreate the old classics.

When you have your wad all together, shimmy up to the crows nest and see what you can see, then make the best choice you can live with... knowing that probably sooner than later, you'll wished you had held on longer. Just remember, the people who bought the new model will be in the same "boat" in a few months.

I visited a NAMM show in LA in the 70's with my friend, Bill Hards, who owned Poway Music. I don't remember much except a tall skinny guy with a BIG nose who was wandering around and turned out to be Jeff Baxter. It was a never ending day of visiting one booth after another and getting souviniers (damn French word) of all the newest hot instrumental things which no musician could possibly survive without, many of which I have never seen again in 30 some years of playing. Pressure was intense on Bill to order at least 50 of whatever was the year's absolutely never to be improved upon gadget that was obsolete by the time we got back to Poway. There were some other stars at the show like, maybe, some of the fledgling country rock people called the Iggles as best I can remember some guy called Joe Walsh trying to show us how to play guitar but I ignored him as he was almost as ugly as Jeff Baxter.

One of the funnest days of my life.

Charlie B,
You summed it up quite well. I'm sure that within the next couple months the planets will line up just right and it will be time. Like buying a computer, you just make the best choice at the time.
To put it in perspective, a couple months is not a big deal. I bought my two Ovations in the early seventies. I have not wanted another until recently.

That's funny about Jeff Baxter...you've seen him on the news channels as a miltary technology analyst, haven't you????...he was on extensively during the Iraq war a year ago. Guess that is his gig now.

No, I am NOT kidding, this is NOT an April Fool!!!

Also, you all know why his nickname is "Skunk", don't you????? :)

Baxter is a very good friend of my sister, so I get the periodic update on his adventures.

Baxter is one of the most pre-emminent experts of defense systems in the US. He is an advisor to some folks in Congress, and a very smart guy in general.

He continues to spend time in studio these days ... sometimes playing when someone needs some incredible guitar work for their album, but most of the time helping produce new up-and-coming bands.

BTW, he has a signature acoustic guitar made by Epiphone.

I don't find it funny at all. the man is a professional musician with killer chops and killer references, steely dan and the doobies for one, and could play most players way under the table. He checks out namm to find new gear, new ideas, catch up with old friends, make new ones and groove on all that is new in the field.

I hope I see Jeff Baxter roaming around the next NAMM. I'll ask him to play a few Steely Dan tunes on my Collectors 2000.

Just want you all to know I was joking about Jeff Baxter, he was there at NAMM and he was pretty young at the time. He has since, and was then, became one of the premier guitar players and experts of all time. At that time, to a young country and bluegrass player as I was, a band called the "Doobie Brothers" had a definite air of danger to it, especially since I was working at a place where I had to maintain a DOD security clearance.
