I taught guitar in a large music center for about 8 years. The other teachers and I would teach a method, Mel Bay, Alfred or Gibson, and add some chords that the student could relate to, such as C / AM / F / G , they could then hear a melody in their heads to go with the progression. It helped keep the lessons from getting boring. If you can learn to read music and understand theroy from the start you are miles ahead from the way I started, which was self taught, I had to learn music at 30 years of age, I regret the lost years I spent plugging along..
