I was wondering what the group thinks about Ovations having the black headstock face? I really like the wood overlay on the headstocks of older Ovations, but the black does look good on my Legend LX. Does anyone know why Ovation went to a black headstock look? Was it to cut cost on using wood as an overlay? I guess I like them both, but I am leaning toward the wood face on the headstocks.

On my pre-1970 Typhoon and Toronado, the headstock is "two tone" so it isn't new. Personally, I like it and have passed up an older black Custom Legend that just had a black headstock. Looks great on the blue Millennium Adamas and the black 6759.

My 2001 Redwod Collector's has the black headstock which (at least to me) looks very classy and compliments the ebony fredboard very nicely...

I have an '02 CL 12 string with the black plastic overlay. I like the look, but I guess for the price I paid I might have preferred an ebony overlay.Sometimes the purist in me likes the snob appeal of real wood, and sometimes I feel like a teenage girl shopping for a car..." I like the shiny black one!".

Why do you think the overlay on the headstock is plastic?

The original ovations had black or very dark faces to the headstocks. So, I see this as a return to our roots and frankly I like the look. Dave

The black is beautiful baby. I think it adds a classy touch to the instrument.

Think about it Paul, What would be the least expensive and most durable material?.....Plastic!!

I think the black gives it a "elegant" look combined with the gold string post of the Legend.

Mike, my gut tells me that Ovation wouldn't be using plastic there. I would guess that it's ebony but I guess that only Ovation could tell us for certain. Especially after going thru the factory tour, I just don't think that the company is going cheap with their material. I also recall seeing necks in the raw form with black wood on the headstock. Check some of the pics that people took.

I don't think it's "plastic".
Someone here (Witko??) mentioned in a thread that the headstock overlay is some type of "fibre" material??? . . .or did I dream that? . .

I am remembering part of a conversation with the "custom" guy Mark over the neck and head. I believe it is a dark stain on the wood covered by the finish. Looking into mine I can't tell.

I don't remember exactly what it is, but it's not plastic.

Depends on your definition of "plastic". My guess is that it is a thin piece of something like "formica" that's glossed over. Anyway, I think it looks really nice, whatever it is. Dave

As in the picture, it's stained with a high gloss finish.

It is Obeechee. It is a wood veeneer. It is popular on new gutiars these days and not just for Ovation. You know the gold logo on a black background/odenchea logo looks clean and crisp. (my spelling might be off)IT IS NOT PLASTIC!!!!

Excellant! That's one more erotic wood I can enjoy on my Elite LX! Lot's better than some old pallet board. A lot more exotic too.
