Location: Brighty in Blighty | Just wondering how the various nylon string Ovations compare in terms of where they lie in a range.
Was thinking of getting a 1763 but is a 1624 better/worse/just different.
Any others to consider? |

Location: Jet City | quality wise, tops on all of them. sound wise, will be different though. One's a cedar top with classic bracing, with a wider nut at 1 7/8. The other is spruce with LX bracing and still a wide nut, but just 1 3/4. The latter would be closest to what you're used to in an Ovation I would imagine.
I've always wondered what an Elite classical would sound like.
If you're looking for a classic classical top, nut width, and tone, I'd probably say the cedar is best, but I've only tried the Country Artist. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | 1624 is a 14 fret neck with Artist bowl. All the rest are 12 fret necks with deep bowl. Choice would probably depend on what you wanted to use it for.

OK, I'm a fingerstyle guitarist and so not used to flat WIDE necks. I prefer mid bowls but willing to entertain a deep bowl if the tome is better.
The 12 fret sounds like a better option but would prefer a more 'regular' neck. Does that help? |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | I can't speak to any but the 6773 LX. But I find one of its greatest advantages comes into play when you play several different guitars in rapid succession. I used to play out and switch back and forth quickly between 6-strings (in three different tunings), 12-strings, and the nylon string. The similar neck width of the CA LX made the transition much easier. If however, you pick and choose which guitar you can play for a decent length of time, I would think your muscle memory would adapt to a slight variation in neck width after a short playing time.
Soundwise, the 6773-LX has a lovely balanced tone that quite appeals to me, but being a mid-bowl, does not have the deep resonance or volume of a deep bowl. But since I usually plug in, the difference is moot.

Location: SoCal | Dweez, you haven't answered the important question, ie are you mostly plugging in or mostly playing acoustic. The 1763 is a deep bowl. It has a great acoustic tone. The 1624 is a shallow bowl (closer to today's mid depth, and to be honest, it's acoustic tone isn't that good. But on stage, it shines.
Also, and I'm taking this straight from an '83 reference, the classical has a 2" nut, the Country Artist a 1 7/8" nut. The 6773 and 1773 both come in at 1 7/8" (the Ovation website has the 6773 at 1 3/4", literature has it at 1 7/8")...... |

Location: SoCal | Ok, so you record plugged in, not using external mics. I'd say, buy an older 1624 or ideally, a 1674 and have Ovation put in a modern preamp. But even if you don't send it to the factory, with off board equipment, you can get a great sound out of even the first generation preamp.

Location: Boise, Idaho | You'd probably prefer the 1624 if you just plug in, because the neck is skinnier, longer and the bowl is shallower, making the guitar easier to handle.
The cutaway on the 1763 might offset any disadvantage of the 12 fret neck if you want to play some high notes. To emphasize what Moody said, I strongly prefer the cedar, deep bowl, 12 fret sound of the Classic. It sounds like a classical guitar with some gusto. The 1624 sounds puny by comparison. The 2 inch flat neck takes some getting used to, but you're good enough to handle it. I smile every time I look at my 1713, it's just such a wonderful guitar. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I just finished a search. I asked about 1713s back on April 11, 2005. Beal, who went by cwk2 at that time, said that cedar and nylon went together better than spruce and nylon. I didn't know who he was then, and he was as cryptic then as he is now, but I'm glad I took his advice.
Later I started a thread on a review of the 1624 I got. You might read those. My opinions are always suspect, since I have a tendency to buy first and ask questions later. It was funny to read about SWMBO saying I had too many guitars about 12 ago. |

My final word would be that if I wanted a truly great recorded nylon string sound I wouldn't use piezo pickups and I wouldn't use an Ovation nylon string. Ovation nylon string guitars are great for live work, but in my opinion they just don't compare acoustically to a good conventional classical guitar, they're just built too heavy. I have a 1773LX Classic and it's great on stage. When miked up in the studio it sounds just like you'd expect, but a classical guitar it ain't.
If I was to record an Ovation nylon I'd go for an older deepbowl model such as the 1613 and use a couple of really good condenser mikes, maybe blend in a little of the direct signal too. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Does anyone think the plugged in sound of a 1624 is better than the plugged in sound of a 1713? I don't, but the preamp in the 1713 is a bit more modern. If you like the plugged in sound of the 1624, you'll like it in the 1763, but you'll probably like the unplugged sound of the 1763 much more.
The neck width and length is a more significant difference than the plugged in sound. |
