One of the 'supergroups' I have yet to hear much of. Any recommendations on which of their albums are worth checking out first?

Skeletons From the Closet is a greatest hits CD. Every song on it is very good and some are absolute classics. It also has an abbreviated version of Turn on Your Love Light that if you never heard the full length version you wouldn't know that it was edited.

I always found that they were better live than the records. And of course you had to properly prepare for the concerts. Once FULLY prepared, they were OK.

When they were at their best they were the best. Garcia and Hunter were serious songwriters as well.
Cliff's tribute act, The Frightful Head, is excellent.

I would have to be stoned to make myself set through a Dead concert.

Once you get into the dead, it's a long stange trip.

I agree, skeltons from the closet is the one to get as an intro. Next get What A Long Strange Trip It's Been: The Best Of The Grateful Dead. It has a great live version of ripple.

To round out the collection, I'd also recommend, a non-dead album, Old and in the Way, the live album. Nice bluegrass from some stellar players including Vassar Clements and of course, ON BANJO, Jerry Garcia.

I highly recommend "Europe \'72" and "Dick\'s Picks Volume IV"

Also: DVD: New Year's Broadast (1978)called The Closing of Winterald is awesome, visually and muscially.

Truckin'
got my chips cashed in.
Keep truckin', like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line,
just keep truckin' on.

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.

Dallas, got a soft machine; Houston, too close to New Orleans;
New York's got the ways and means; but just won't let you be, oh no.

Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of true love,
Most of the time they're sittin' and cryin' at home.
One of these days they know they gotta get goin'
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.

Truckin', like the do-dah man. Once told me "You've got to play your hand"
Sometimes your cards ain't worth a dime, if you don't lay'em down,

Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it's been.

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is "Ain't it a shame?"

Truckin', up to Buffalo. Been thinkin', you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin' on.

Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window.
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in.

Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowlin' pin.
Knocked down, it get's to wearin' thin. They just won't let you be

You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel;
Get tired of travelin' and you want to settle down.
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin',
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.

Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me

What a long, strange trip it's been.

Truckin', I'm a goin' home. Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin' on.

With the benefit of a quarter century or so to think about it, American Beauty was probably my favorite Dead album.

"What a Long Strange Trip it's Been"

I am trying to remember where I was on 8/9/95 when Jerry died...
I know some of my Deadhead friends cried. And I know we got high...
But I cannot even remember what State I was in!
Glenwood Springs CO?.. Columbus OH?.. Seattle?
I was alittle crisp around the edges back then. :cool:

But I knew there would be no more week-long parties outside the Kaiser Auditorium.

Twas the end of an era!

[Yeah... American Beauty]

Ooo-Oooo! I just remembered!
I was in Austin TX, and Tom-Tom (a street drummer) and some friends were leaving to go catch the start of the summer tour...
I said, "I'll just wait 'til the tour catches-up with me"
It always did, but not that year.

I loved it when they'd play their annual three-day weekend at Red Rocks back in the 80's. The Deadheads would camp out all over the place, the majority of whom never even made it to the concerts.

I agree with Al, the blewgrass stuff was much better and what Garcia did with Dawg, it's great.

The rest, as I said before was really good between your last beer and pass outtime.

Guys, your replies alone tell me that I may not be ready for this trip. Maybe I'll wait till I'm older.
