By the way, my wife doesn't have enough shoes. |

WOW, you got TWO 1778's good to see I'm not the only nut here. when I get a good one i'm always temped to buy a second - the flames are def very cool -- do they play/sound similar?? was wondering how consistant they are -- |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | As a matter of personal opinion... I like the OP-30 better than the OP-Pro.
I prefer the Pre-Shape and EQ-In/Out on the OP-30.
The Pre-EQ on the OP-Pro isn't quite the same thing.
I am getting used to the OP-Pro... I had to, since I have 3 of them! (and one more in the mail!)
Plus, they are putting the OP-Pro in Everything except the cheapest Celebrity's. (and the iDea).
As to the two 1778T's... The black one I got 'Used' with no case, and I paid the Most for that one! :mad:
More that the two contour bowls or the Flame T. (with nice cases)
But the 1778T-5 was my first T. ( :rolleyes: Everybody say "Awww")
And I just had the Black T out, playing it side-by-side with the 2078T Contour Sweet-T and the Original still sounds better. (or at least Unique! :D ) |

Location: Mooresville, NC | For me the 1778T is the best live performance acoustic guitar I have (also own a Larrivee OM, Tacoma Chief). I get to play every week live, and so enjoy the guitar. I am also a Fender Strat player, so I love the way this Ovation plays - the rock maple neck feels like my strat.
Mine has been modified in that it came with an OP-Pro Preamp, and now has a VIP-5 in it along with a balanced 1/2" XLR output. Love all the features of the VIP - and it was definately an improvement from the Op-Pro for versatility (but keep in mind, I'd have rated the Op-Pro as Excellent).
Tone - I'd say very defined and articulate...excellent base, sweet mids and highs. Fantastic for lead playing - and obviously soon to be a collectors item since they are now discontinued. I own all types of gear, amps and effects - like all of it, but LOVE this guitar... won't be selling this one. |

[I paid $666 for mine with no case... Immediately before they went on sale for $599 NEW! :mad:
And I grimace every time I type that, but it was a good deal at the moment. :D ] |

The Orange Flame has all that paint and lacquer on the top, so the sound is different.
The 12, and the Sweet T are contour bowls, so the sound is different.
But all the black textured top T's sound similar... but not exactly alike.
But you can hear the similarity of the textured top.
The flame is the one that is really different cuz of the different Top composition.
I got the 1778T of eBarf, and it was a good deal at the time. T's were going for $600 and up, and the economy was better.
It was a Seller's Market back then... and that wasn't too long ago. |

But you can hear the similarity of the textured top. I'm gonna start a new thread - I think - I'm curious to see how many 'flavors of the T there are. I saw 2 yesterday - the newer one (based on ser no.) was:
lighter in weight
thinner neck
the body was different dimension -subtle but different
the saddle was different
the finish on the neck was less glossy - def satin
and (here's the biggie) the neck was MAHOGANY - not maple
they still sounds very similar (as you said, not 100%, but very similar)
I can see someone really liking/disliking the thicker neck profile on the older one - likewise with the lighter weight of the newer one.
so .... there was a significant production change within this model the older one was 5xxxxx and the newere one was serial no 6xxxxx
anybody else observed this? |

it is not as nice in terms of woods - rosewood neck versus ebony, also not ebony bridge either, but the sunburst is done EXCELLENT and the inlaid top is great - sound and playability great - very bassy - loud and can strumm aggressively --- this is based on seeing only 1 |

I was thinking that perhaps the contour bowls don't sound as good as the roundback - from an accoustic/physics perspective, I could really see that. but lately I played a contour that souded great, so I don't know -- with all your experience, what would you guess, do you give up a little sound quality with a contour. (I'm sure that smaller body guitars won't sound as good as a larger body) |

Location: CA | As to the last question, the only basis for comparison I have was between a six-year-old 1778T and a brand-spankin'-new 2078T Sweetwater special order. The former has the mid-bowl, the latter the contour.
The former came to used. It was set up perfectly and I think the top was pretty much opened up. A side effect I mentioned here once was that after you had played it for about five minutes, a distinctly 'woodie' aroma started coming out of the soundholes — a unique aspect of the sideholers I had never thought of before.
The 2078T was brand new, desperately needed setup to lower the strings, and obviously had a brand new top whose full potential was at least several playing months away. However, once I got the action right and played, it sounded pretty darn good, with a definite edge on the 1778T in the bass department. I imagined that this might actually be accentuated a bit by the contour, as the deepest part of the 'wedge' is on the bass side. As one might imagine, there was no woodie smell out of that one for awhile — in fact, the combined glue and paint smells had me flinging windows open to encourage air flow.
But the more I played it, I won't say the less I liked it, because it's a very nice guit. But I guess the more I appreciated the 1778T. I decided I didn't like the contour back from a pure comfort standpoint. But I also felt the 2078 — again compared directly to the 1778 — actually had TOO MUCH bass. In acoustic mode, it seemed on my guitar to consistently overpower the higher notes. Not to a huge degree, certainly, but I found myself often trying to compensate by hitting the bass strings with a lighter touch.
Were I to play a 2078T one day on which the top had opened up, I'm sure I would probably be pleasantly surprised. But for my $$$, the Elite T remains the best-sounding, best balanced and most comfortable Ovation I've ever played. |

is it a maple neck on that, and is the profile v thin or thick oval? |
