What is the general opinion the Elite T model?
Also which the better model: T or TX?

I have a serious Jones for a 1778T or 1868T, but my wife is fighting me on this one.

Is she fighting because she prefers one over the other, or because she doesn't want you to get a guitar?

The T's are considered to be among the best sounding Ovations due to their bass-side-only soundholes. The fact that the T's give you this sound at such a great price makes them very popular. You do get a bigger sound with a deeper bowl. My daughter has a shallow bowl pre-LX model which sounds better than any other shallow-bowl O I've ever heard. Mid-bowl versions sound bigger, and I have a Contour bowl T with REALLY full and deep sound.

T's with OpPro preamps are common now, so I'd look for that over an Op-30.

Her words... "You have 5 guitars and only 2 hands. What do you need another one for?"

"Because I want it." just wasn't the answer she was looking for.

It might be time to invoke the "One in, one out" rule.

Note: The rule is for the guitars and not the Wife!

Simple. Because you don't have one like this. It fills a void. It has a unique tone (careful not to say the tone, as that would close this particular avenue in the future) which none of your other guitars has.

If you search around this forum you'll see that members here describe it as having the biggest bang for the buck in the whole O lineup. THe sound far exceeds what would be expected with it's design.

When they went on sale a few months ago, a lot of people here bought them.

I'm into the appearance of a guitar as much as tone, sometimes even more so. For this model, it was the full bowl red flames paint that sold me on the RF variant. I would also add that the 1778 Elite-T models provide one of the best bang-for-the-buck bargains in the entire line-up.

Call Alpep for the best deal on a new Ovation but don't take any marital advice from Cliff.

So, which guitar are you going to trade in?

The Ovation Elite 1778T was the best sounding and most fun to play acoustic guitar I've ever owned. The medium bowl fit me perfectly, the neck was electric-like and the action was almost stratocaster low and smooth. The medium bowl projected plenty of sound and it was very well balanced over the tonal range. The only 'con' was that I wasn't particularly taken with the nonskid paint. So when the opportunity presented itself last year to replace the 1778T with a limited run of 2078Ts that had a neato epaulet laid in around the soundholes, I jumped on it.

What a disappointment that was. I know several guys here who did the same deal and were pleased, but IMHO the 2078 didn't hold a candle to the 1778T. The former felt big and clunky due to the contour back (which I've decided I don't like at all), and the sound was a bit bass-heavy for my taste and didn't hold a candle to the 1778 happy, jangly tone. So now the 2078 is gone to a new owner and I'm also back on the prowl for another 1778T, hopefully a 'lusty red' one although those seem rarer than hen's teeth. And even rarer will be one I can afford at the moment, what with the economy and the impending holidays. Live and learn.

Which one to trad-in? Thats a toughy.
I just got the 1751.
She bought me the CC257 & the Strat.
The Mustang isn't going anywhere.
The Bradley isn't worth anything.

Anyone want to trade up for a Nikon D2H Camera Body? :)

Some marital advice for what it's worth:
The next time she asks you which color dress, paint or whatever you like better, don't say you don't give a damn what color because you like the old one just fine. When you ask her which color Ovation she likes better, she will say she doesn't give a damn because what you have is just fine.
The guitars for only 2 hands line is just meant for this rebuttal: "Fine, I'll quit buying guitars when I have the same number as you have pairs of shoes. You only have 2 feet."
If this advice does not acheive the desired result, it's because your wife is unreasonable, not me, and the fallback advice is to remind her and her attorney that the guitars are not worth anything.

"She bought me the CC257..."

Maybe she would participate in a trade-up from the CC257 to another guitar. Christmas is coming! On the other hand, she might be insulted if you want to sell the guitar she got for you. In that case, it wasn't my suggestion.

Oddball, I like your statement that the tone of the 1778 is "jangly." That description fits it perfectly. In fact, if you want to increase the tone to maximum jangle, run your signal through a JangleBox pedal. Now we're listening! Its brand name says it all.

Actually, the guitar I REALLY want is that proto that Slipkid gave us a peek at. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's a 1778T with the epaulet, which (to me) really makes the guitar more visually appealing than the plain "roofing tar" look. Plus it has the nice mid-depth bowl. Alas, Ovation never put them into production and that may be the only one of its kind. BTW, this is exactly what the Sweetwater 2078Ts look like, except they have a contour bowl and a 'visible' black binding on the top-to-body joint.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that Krylon comes in 'koa'. Maybe I'll get out the masking tape and make my own freakin epaulet. It'll be an outie, too! LOL
