Q: I saw you recently perform at the NAMM show. You were playing an Ovation Guitar. Is that your main guitar?
Kaki King: Yeah, I play Ovations quite a bit. I'm actually working with (the) company, we're kind of redesigning some things. I got some brand new ones since NAMM that look a lot different. They're really a generous company and sort of letting me do what I want, so I've submitted a few designs and they worked hard to change the shape of the body. They really hooked me up with all the trimmings. So I do play with Ovations mainly because it's a great stage guitar. I've also played on stage with a Lowden (given to her by David Lindley--p.c.), and I have a Taylor at home (given to her by me--p.c.).
Q: I've met a few players who are smaller in stature that prefer playing Ovations because of the way the guitar makes itself available, especially the ones with the shallow bowl. Plus with your crossover technique, that would also seem to be a good reason.
Kaki King: I actually really like the way they sound, especially on record. They sound especially crisp. I tune my E string down to C and that really comes across on the Ovation with drive and sustain. I don't think you really get the same amount of sustain from a wooden guitar. I really like to play in super low tunings and that has a lot to do with it. They're definitely not the most versatile guitar but at the same time, they have this character to them that I'm trying to explore more and bring out more in my playing. I play a deep bowl version that they don't really make anymore but I insist on playing deep bowl Ovations...."

Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | Great interview,Pop!! I love the way she set the interviewer (Don Dawson) straight about her guitar being a Deep bowl!!!....She tells 'em like it is!!!(she don't play no stinkin' shallow bowl :eek: )

The interviewer tries to pin her into a position on being "small in stature" and how that must be why she likes Ovation..... and she basically tells him to go toss off, its about tone! Love it.

but hey no problem Kaki does not need my support, I have no problem with it. The fall is often harder and faster than the climb. |

Location: atlanta | I hope everyone will forgive me, but I just have to share what I consider the greatest review ever on Kaki's first record. It's from All Music Guide at Barnes & Noble. To reinforce what has been said earlier, she couldn't have done it without the deep bowl design of the Adamas II l581.
