Not popularly well known, but he was an amazing and influencial player in his day. Was part of the infamous "Wrecking Crew"

Why didn't you say - I have around 20 albums........
Not forgetting that he was the guitar player on the original Cry Me A River.

I kinda forgot about him until you posted "Nutbush County"...

I believe he played on some of Ike's stuff.

Well known guitarist of my parents' generation. He even had a Gibson model named for him.

The weird thing about his signature model was that he hardly if ever played it. He always went back to the old Charlie Christian model (variously by Gibson and Ibanez) every time.
It's hard to tell from the pic but it doesn't look like one of the models with bow-tie inlays.
In the 40 years since they were first in the catalogue I've never seen one of those guitars in the flesh.

the title of this thread, "smokin' player", made me immediately recall joe walsh's, "the player you drink the smoker you get".

I've had one of his albums cycling through the jukebox for the past two years. He was a big name endorsement for Gibson in the early 60's. If the video is recent, he sure has aged remarkably well. Is it more likely a recent release of an old recording?

I think he had a very bad stroke way back in the 90's but, hung-on in a very incapacitated state until 5 or six years ago....

From Wiki:
"Kessel died (May 6, 2004) of a brain tumor in San Diego, California. He had been in poor health after suffering a stroke in 1992."

killer player
He did not like his sig model. I have seen many of them.
I think he had a falling out with gibson.
He said in an interview that the guitar he used was modified many times and he felt it was not like any stock instrument.

but it was barney kessel
trini lopez
and
the brydland that were the 3 biggies back in the day
of course with howard roberts

Once again I'm reminded of the width and depth of musical knowledge around here.
I know what I know but there is so much more to be known that I will never know.

Interesting to watch the difference in their fast picking techniques. Ellis breaks at the wrist, as taught by Matt Smith, whereas Kessel breaks more at the elbow. Thanks for the links, Jeff.

I actually own a Gibson BK Custom(w/bow ties). I also heard that he never liked them. I had mine in the shop many years ago in Indianapolis. The guy that was working on it told me that when BK was in town he stopped in his shop and acually played my guitar.Really means nothing to me, and don't know for sure if was a true story. He was in town then, though.
