I've been keeping an eye on this early 1619 . The seller is relatively local to me - south of Jax, about an hour away - and he said I could come by and take a look at it in person.

The picture of the ding on the lower bass bout isn't that great - I have a feeling it's from a pretty good hit by a mike stand or some such. The guitar tech the seller had look at her says the braces are intact and everything else checks out.

Assuming I got her she would go straight to Mother for the beauty treatment. I'm thinking to offer no more than about $500 since I'll spend about half that again to beautify her. Is that too low?

That's definitely more then just a Ding!
Only a thought here , but, won't most people who see the "DING" shy away from it not knowing what the M.S. can do and how good they do it? I would think $500.0 is more than enough. Of course I will "Yield" to the more knowlegable members of the OFC and advise you to listen to them.

Funny, I was looking at this not an hour ago.

Serge, that ding doesn't look "cosmetic" to me. Looks like it's well into the wood.

I looked at this several days ago...it really looks like it’s into the wood and perhaps has cracked the top around the hit...I would think Mother will want to replace the top...Not sure if that means the bowl as well...top and bowl would be aprox. $350 to $450 PLUS the $500 you're thinking of asking...why not let the auction run and see how cheaply you can get this...it's a nice guitar...but circa $950? If the top is not cracked I would just leave it (polish it up a bit) and play it. However, since these don't come up very often, it's a personal choice I guess...

I'm waffling on this one - I have a slightly later 1619-1 (with the K-bar neck) that has a small paint chip missing from about the same place that I got last year & I could just send that one up to J&K&Co. But I really like the older neck with the carved TRC.

Mike, that figure is the absolute maximum I'd be willing to go given it's (suspected) condition.

Wab, if you're interested I could take a look at it for you.

I'd go look at it and see how bad it is. Might be able to get away with just filling it and smoothing over. A nice old one for sure.

Put 3 or 4 hundreds under his nose and see what happens

No, not for me, but thanks, Serge.

Before I can buy anything else I need to come up with a rational need for it.

Good Reasoning. I just sold the '79 1615-4 Pacemaker. I have a '77 metal tag -1 with a broken top which is now off to Mother...Reason: it needs to be fixed and I need a Pacemaker 12...that works for me... :D

I try not to have multiple guitars that essentially sound the same. I've got most of the bases covered now.

Perhaps a reso or lap steel is in order.

The blue and white oval label with brown highlights pictured on this guitar was used only for a short time from about 1980 to 1982, and was replaced by the blue and white oval label without brown highlights that continued throughout the mid 1980's.

The label on an early 1978 Ovation should be the oval foil label, which was used through 1979. And, in the case of an early 1978 Custom Legend, the label should be a gold oval foil label, not a blue and white oval paper label with the brown highlights.

This guitar was apparently returned to the factory in the early 1980's for some type of repair, because the label does not appear to be original to a guitar of that vintage.

Great info, bobfirth, thanks. When I spoke to the seller he said th first 2 digits of the serial number were either blurred out or disfigured. He said he called Ovation and spoke to "someone named Kim" (I kept silent) who helped him try to match the style/appearance/other details to an appropriate age, and that Kim had come up with the date.

Looks like the rosette has been replaced as well. Should be abalone and this one looks like the one on my old Ultra.

FWIW, Kim is a real entity at Ovation. He's one of the guys who coordinates their excellent repair service. Good guy when I've dealt with him.
