Were there any Deep Shiney Bowl Glen Campbells made? I'm thinking there were but I'm not sure. |

I'm far from the best person to answer this, but my 1981-vintage GC 12-string is certainly NOT a shiny-bowl, and I've never seen one at a guitar show, either. We need the guys with the "old knowledge" and the yellowed catalogs to answer this one.

The GC shiny bowl Deluxe Balladeer was produced from late 1968 until about mid 1969. It was one of the best sounding Ovations ever built. I've been looking for one for several years to buy.

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | There were deep shiny bowl Glen Campbels but not many.They changed soon after to artist bowls per GC request.They came in 6 and 12 string versions..All shiny bowls were deep.They never had artist bowls(mid bowl) in shiny bowl.They did make 4(total) shallow bowl contemporary folk classics in shiny bowls.They were black,red ,blue and green.Other than that and maybe any custom orders there were only deep shiny bowls.. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Thanks Sam, I remember the 4 classics, my mother still has the green one, where the red, blue and black are is a mystery.
The question was asked to me about a shiney bowl GC with a 1/8 output jack. I just couldn't remember if there was a shiney GC deep, I thought so but wanted confirmation and got it, Thanks.
The other part of the question is that there was never a shiney bowl with electronics (unless it was retrofitted) and they all had 1/4 jacks although some of the first had an XLR type plug. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I think there was a slight gap (1-2 years?) between the end of the GC Shiny and the intro of the 1127 GC Artist. Is that right Paul?
Interesting that my GC Shiny bowl has a 1/4 jack hole in the bowl, but has no signs of any pickup ever being installed. I looked under the saddle and no signs of a lead hole. I looked inside with a mirror and no signs of anything. But it's got the 1/4 inch jack hole in the bowl. Sam - do you know anything about this? |

| To my knowledge, the GC Deluxe Balladeer was never offered with a pickup. On the Goodtime Hour programs that show Glen Campbell with the Deluxe, there is always a microphone in front of it. I presently own one GC Deluxe, and have seen three, and have never seen one with a pickup installed. I assume that the jack hole on Dave's GCDB was added and not original from the factory. Ovation did not offer the Barcus-Berry for a year or so after the GC Deluxe was discontinued.
It does appear that there was a time-lapse between the GCDB and the 1127, although it could have been only a few months. While the GCDB was produced only in 1968 and all have 1968 serial numbers, I've never seen an 1127 with a serial number before 1969 or 1970. |

Location: SoCal | My impression was that Glen played the GCDB the first season his show was on the air (January thru June 1969). When the show came back in September 1969 he was playing the GC Artist Balladeer (a greatly inferior instrument IMHO). The Ovation pickup was added in 71 or 72.
The 1970 Ovation catalog did not offer acoustic electrics. The 1972 catalog did. |

Location: Scotland | During the 70's Barcus-Berry made an end-pin jack which had a 1/8th rather than 1/4 socket. Didn't GC have Barcus-Berry "Hot-Dots" in at least one of his guitars? |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | As some here know, I have one of the interm acoustic electric nylon strings built for Glen. Not sure about the existance of a Hot Dot configuration but this one has a prototype stereo Barcus-Berry setup with two metal pickups fastened to the bridge, top mounted volume control and four-pin XLR output (see pics below). This is one of the VERY first Ovation A/E guitars (1970) and is Artist depth and textured bowl. As stated above, there were no electric shineys.
My 1968 GC Deluxe Balladeer (presumably the first one built) had a pickup system in it when I got it but it was not original and has since been removed. I have lots of video and pics of this guitar being miked, as opposed to being plugged in.

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | I have the black bowl contemp. folk classic.A lady who lives in Ct. has the red bowl.She is a folk singer and i believe was a freind of CHK.It was offered to me a few years ago with an appraisal from mandolin bros..It was valued at $2800 at that time.It did not have the original bridge(rounded brazilian)but im sure mandolin bros did not know this at the time because they never mention it in their letter.I still have her info somewhere if anyone is interested.I have mine for sale also which is all original..
As to the GC shiny bowls,i dont think i have ever seen a factory installed electronic system on a shiny bowl model before 1970.According to my records and catalogs the electronics were installed about the time of the nonshiny bowl artist models.The earliest being the baldwin electronics that ovation bought from baldwin(around 1970) and used in their guitars to buy time while developing their own electronics.Then soon after they went to barcus berry and bought pickups for the guitars.Around 1971 ovation developed their own electronics(single volume knob on shoulder of guitar)... |
