When I bought my DiMeola-II, I didn't have a clue who he was. The guitar just sounded and looked right.

Sexist or not, I think you're right on. The ME signature model has, to me, the image of being a "chick guitar" simply because she plays it. Some guitars are definitely feminine in style, with colors and styles that aren't tacticool.

The thing is, though, that these days with computer aided manufacturing, the factory can easily make structurally identical guitars with only decorative differences. They could make a Kaki King signature model with the white epaulette, powder blue color, and crown 12th fret inlay. The same structure could be used for a male artist signature model, but in a dark color with no epaulets.

As a consumer, I really don't see the reason to pay hugely inflated prices for a signature guitar. The Al Dimeola offers some interesting features, and it is reasonably priced compared to other O's of similar build. But all those custom shop distressed copies that sell for many thousands more? No way.

Ok, not sure if I missed this reading over the thread , but, even IF Ovation asked recently, I don't think it would happen as Martin already has a "Nancy Wilson" signature guitar.

I think a Nancy Wilson or a Heart sig guitar would sell even today. Martin sells them.

That is so not a bad idea. It would establish Ovation as the hip guitar company (something we already know, but seems to escape the guitar buying community at large) - and the opportunities for the print ad campaign are staggering.

To the defense of Martin wrt Signature Guitars:

I hear comments like Martin are whores and will put an artists name on anything just to make a buck. That's anything but true and the real story of the Signature Series is kind of interesting.

Yes, Martin has a few signature Models that they produce in volume. Like the Clapton 000 and the Jubar. Yes, they'll put Claptons name on anyting they think the public will buy.

But the signature series guitars (there's been maybe 75 or so different one) are each a very limited run of 200-300 guitars and are specifically designed with inputs from the artist. And the best part is that a significant percentage of the proceeds are donated to a charity chosen by the artist. The sum donations have totaled over 1 million dollars.

You may not like Martin, may not like that they have so many guitars with peoples names on them, you may not like that they worked with Nancy Wilson on one, but you can't fault them that their Heart (no pun intended) isn't in the right place.

What Dave said: +1

Chris Martin's anniversary address to the Martin Open House on Aug 1st was one of the most interesting addresses by a CEO I have ever heard...Martin is looking ahead and moving outside the box while not forgetting the past...good advice me thinks...

Along with Dewey Cox, you could do a Nigel Tufnel, maybe a folklore sig for Alan Barrows. Throw in a Ron Nasty or Dirk McQuickly model (since John and Paul both played O's in their careers). It might not be any less expensive or troublesome than using "real" musicians, but it would be fun.

Hey! hey! hey!

I bought my MEII because the guitar kicks serious butt for a 12 string! Sure, I'm a Melissa fan (of the older stuff), but I didn't like, nor owned the first Melissa Adamas. Didn't like the guitar much. The MEII is an awesome gigging guitar, it's rock solid, sounds great, and is reliable. Just wish the Op Pro was louder. Did they fix that yet?

Slim Witman's name could be on the guitar for all I care...the MEII (SWII?) kicks butt. (Although Shakira doing that hip shakin' thing might sway me to her signiture model).

How do those deals work, anyway? Do you get free guitars? Do they pay you outright? Do you have to use that model on stage exclusively?

I mean, if Ovation is interested,I'm currently unsigned with anyone else.

(Well, Esteban has approached me about endorsing a lower end model, but I've stopped taking his calls)
