Location: UK | Hi just thought id introduce my 1627 ( serial no 170821) which I got off fleabay a few weeks ago. Its had a hard life but after an hour or so with a soldering iron, drill and pop riveter I got the electrics going, though Im still waiting on new knobs to relace the cracked originals.
It has the usual scratches and chips but the worst bit is a ham fisted previous owner tried to fit a strap button to the base of the neck
 
That ones going to be a test of my DIY skills!
The action is a bit high so I beleive from what Ive read that I need to remove some shims from under the bridge. Any advice of the best way of doing this without damaging the pickup. Im sure you guys have the knowledge

The easiest way to get at the shims without damaging the pickup is to push the pickup wire upwards from inside the bowl. That'll raise the saddle/pickup assembly (what we call the PUassy) enough that you can the grab it and finish lifting it away from the bridge. The shims are in the saddle slot under the PUassy. There are two plastic doohickeys (another technical term) on either side of the saddle that hold the whole thing in place by pressure. You can feel the pins for those from inside the guitar, so push those up first before you try to remove the PUassy.

| Remove the strings, get a small pair of needle-nose pliers and carefully pull up the 2 tabs on either side of the bridge assembly. Place your hand inside the sound-hole, find the small cable that is attached to the bottom of the pickup and slowly push it up. The saddle assembly will rise up out of the bridge. Any shims will be under the saddle assembly. Remove the shims, replace the saddle assembly, and re-insert the tabs.
