Trying to narrow down my GAS attack and decided another acoustic is the way to go. I have narrowed my options down to the following but have only had minimal playing opportunities in the stores......so I turn to the professionals  at OFC to guide to me the promisied land.

The finalists are (unless someone throws in a ringer):

1861
1867
1778 Elite LX
6778 LX

What are the general consensus on the LX models? Does anyone have clear cut favorites (and why)?

New or used, once I make the decision, the hunt for the "one" will begin and I look forward to the OFC members input.

Stephen

Oh yeah....don't really play live anymore so this would be for personal enjoyment and for use in my home recording studio...either miked up or DI'd. :D

I don't care what one you get I am just glad someones getting a new Ovation!

After I get over the shock from the purchase of some more $$$$ PA equipment, I want very badly to replace that old Classical Ovation I used to own and, like a big dummy, sold!

There's always next year

I'll tell you what I told my daughters in their first driving lesson:

"stay between the lines, keep the shiny side up and go as fast as your wallet will let you!"

You should play as many as possible and then get the 1778LX - or just jump to an Adamas SMT.

Play them and listen/feel/believe.

I opted eventually for the 6778 LX in NEB finish and love the resonance of this guitar. You will love anyone you get. Enjoy! :D

I hadn't given consideration to the SMT but maybe I should track down a store that carries them and have a go.

How does the SMT compare to the CVT? What's a few hundred more :D for great sound!

I picked up an 1861 super shallow bowl off ebay, almost by accident for $310 with case. Guitar was mint, case was used, scuffed, one punch crack, but the integrity and mechanics were all fine.

Plugged it into the PA for the first time at practice and my buddy with the Martin and my buddy with the Takamine both could not keep their hands of it.

The clarity, fullness, and bass coming out of the guitar through the PA just left their guitars flat.

For the money, I am very happy and my buddies are jealous.

OK Stephen, here's your "ringer"-Elite 1778 T. I played one side by side with a 1778 LX at the local Guitar Center and to my ears it sounded better. It may not have the Op Pro pre-amp, but it does have a fine pre-amp and cromatic tuner. Cetrainly, it's not as fancy as the Elite LX, but at $699 new with a case it's hard to beat. Does Al Pep still have that demo one for $550?

The Elite T models are great for the money.

The 1861 Standard Balladeer is a good guitar, but you can probably find a Legend 1867 for not too much more, and I think it is worth the difference.

It should be noted that the first two guitars on your list are shallow bowl models, and the LX guitars are midbowl. If you open your options to include all midbowls, there are more choices.

If you want to know more about the differences between mid and shallow bowls (or the opinions many of us hold about them) read some of the other recent threads.

I tried an elite lx the other day at GC. That's what it said on the tag and it had an lx on the peghead. It was less then $900.

Very warm full and bassy sounding and surprising loud for a multi hole guitar. It did not sound plasticy like my balladeer except the darn b string. Very nice.

I have picked up the single hole balladeer lx's and legend lx's and they did nothing for me but this elite was very nice.

I don't know about the neck profile and finish. I noticed the balladeer lx had a narrower and glossier finsish to the neck. I definetely prefer the natural feel of a beefy oiled ovation neck like my S771.

Sounds like the Elite Standard - non gloss neck.

It is important to field test and see which ones talk to you. I'm a multi-hole fan myself but find I need to face a reflective wall to hear myself.

It was either CharlieB or CMS Man that expunded the virtues of the Tung Oiled necks (like my CL12).

I'm not fast enough to have a strong preference.

They give you a lot of thump and jump for the buck!

That's good Brad.

I also tell my daughters one more thing:

Thanks Paul,

I actually prefer the mid bowls. What additional choices should I consider before I go to the stores to nail down "the one"!

Right now I am starting to lean towards the Adamas line.....probably the CVT over the SMT but if I fall in love with something different when I get to the stores and start playing....then so be it!

Watch ebay and get the next Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer (after stonebobbo, of course).
