I was just curious, is there anyone else here (besides me) that plays Second Life (a virtual world simulator for those not familiar)?

I've been involved with SL over the past year and have noticed that there are many musicians using SL to play LIVE concerts (live audio streaming). I attended one last week that was very good. All three performers were very entertaining and some of the songs (whether covers or originals) were amazing. Much of the guitar work was very good. Some of these folks have quite a following in SL alone. Its a very unique medium in which to play live.

I was just curious.

Don't take this wrong, I'm by no means criticizing what anyone else does to entertain themselves, but I enjoy real life far too much to take part in these VR worlds. It's much more fun (for me) to hook up in person with all the goofballs - er, I mean, great people - I've met thru this board for a weekend jam session.

I've been researching Second Life on and off, more from the outside-looking-in. I've been told you can sign on for free to check it out, but I haven't found that option yet.

Look in the upper right corner of the SL home page, next to Resident Login / Join

Its basically a 3D "game". I hate calling it a "game" because there is no goal or score to keep. You can do or be just about anything you want... literally. Its like visiting another city or world. Some of the builds are spectacular. You can really get lost in there.

There are some rather large REAL corporations existing in this virtual world. I believe it's Cisco that requires that all meetings to be attended as a human!!!

A friend of mine also worked for a company that had essentially no physical presence in the traditional sense. They all logged on from home, went to their virtual offices and such to conduct business.

I've seen it out of curiosity but never "participated". No desire to either - just not my thing. Maybe after I master my first life (and I'm nowhere near that).

By the way, I was just reading about how a woman found her husband, whom she had met on SL, "cheating" with another on SL and divorced him because, to her, that was a "real" infidelity. I honestly found the whole story pretty pathetic. Just kinda wanted to scream "CLICK!".

I'm with Iffy and Weas. I have enough trouble with the first life. I need to quit escaping it to this board.

. . . or it simiulates a virtual world . . . reality- twice removed.

In that world, it's ok to marry your sister.

DRAT DRAT DRAT and TRIPLE DRAT!!!!!

As this is OT anyway...

I signed on... and although I realized it was a 3-D simulation... I didn't realize how good it was..... hence... I'm out. I can't watch any 3-D type of anything on a computer. I even get sick watching HDTV.

Too bad.. it looked kinda interesting... for about a minute.

Weaser, it seems the "Tabloid" news on SL always gets noticed before any of the other good stuff. And like any community (virtual or otherwise), they all have their seeder sides.

Mr.O, yes it takes some graphics horsepower to run SL. My laptop is out of spec for it, but runs at the lower end and works well enough for me. if you get a warning that your PC is not compatible, just click OK and keep going. It may still work. You won't really know until it crashes 3-4 times in a row.

All I was really looking for was to see if anyone here had tried performing in SL. There were several hundred people at the last one. I thought it was an interesting concept of playing live without leaving your home.
