Location: 6 String Ranch | So we're sitting in Debanjo's living room today. Caleb is there with Steve and me, and we're just banging away on the 6 strings. In attendance was a 39 D18, 40 D18, 43 D28bone, 98 D28-CW, 08 Collings D42 Braz, 08 Collings CJ, Tak 75. Fortunatly Caleb is a great player so that made up for the shit we had to play on.Steve can keep up with him and I got to think about my post on the one thing you wish you could do over. I wish I'd learned how to really play, 30 years ago.
A good time anyway. The 39 was best, fractionally ahead of the 40 followed by the CJ. Then the 43 which was only marginally better than the D42. Then the 75 and the custom Martoin Clarence White brought up the rear.
Funny how everyone goes opn about brazilian this and brazilian that yet the ones we kept coming bact to were the Mahogony. |

Location: Cicero, NY | Call it naivete but what's it's say when two '08 Collings' and - GOD FORBID! - a Tak compete with a few pre-war Martins which always seem to be where the bar starts? Does "opening up" count for nothing these days? |

Location: 6 String Ranch | All those guitars were pretty much above the bar anyway. The two Collings have the Varnish finish and they sound like 20 year old guitars. |

Don't we all. I have so many bad habits I'd have to un-learn first. :o
The wife & I just got back from dinner with Trader Jim and Mrs Trader. Some honkin' good chili and a few rounds on his CEO. That baby sings. I had the OM-18V which is a great sounding guitar but can't match the volume of the CEO. Don't know if the Trader can up load any pic's.
I'll bet the 39 D18 is sweet. :cool: |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I spent an evening early last spring at Wayne H's shop and was able to view and play some of the finest Martin and Henderson guitars ever made...a '34 burst bone D-28, several other bones from the late 30's, and some awesome D-18's...Don had both of his Henderson pre-war 45 style Dread's...incredible; Wayne played his OM '45 style and a new incredible 18 he had just finished w/figured mahogony...one of the best sounding guitars I have ever heard...my '48 D-28 was played by Wayne, Josh Pickett (guitarist for "No Speed Limit")and myself (introducing "Waiting for the Wind"): needless to say, it was an evening I will never forget...

Location: SoCal | I compared notes with Keller one time, since we're both the same age. In college, I was mostly concerned with getting laid. He was playing guitar, practicing 6-7 hours a day, then gigging 6 hours in the evening. He learned how to play. I didn't. Like Beal, I wish I had really learned 30 years ago.
Oh, and being a gigging musician, Keller probably got lucky much more often me in those years...... |

Location: South of most, North of few | I'm with Beal on the body woods. Mahog is my choice over any Rosewood or Braz for sound. The others look nicer, but for pure tone, I think the Mahog has it all over the others.
On another note, it was fun last night with Capo guy and his wife just sitting around and noodling on the Martins. Woody's right, the guitars are secondary, the friendships are what makes it special. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Great way to spend an afternoon. A riding acquaintance of mine owns a Shelby Cobra collection outside Denver. We've spent many wonderful rainy afternoons walking around his assortment of something like 40 vintage Cobras, most with racing heritage in original, unrestored condition, plus tons of related signs and artifacts of the day. A group of us are planning a trip up there on Friday. Last time we were there, we figured his collection to be worth at least $30 million. He still drives them around for parades and an occasional vintage street race, although he says he no longer needs to push them to their limits. Glad to see the vintage guitars still being used for their original purpose. |
