I now have seen a few comments - i'd be interested in hearing why - the only thing I can think of is the op30 has the 'mids shift' to shift mids/bass to a different freq range - does any use this and if yes, why?

never too old to learn - Joe

I don't think that it is...but personally, I still like the sound and the simplicity of the OP-24 of all the Ovation Preamps...

I don't think it is, either... but I think the Optima is.

I think the Optima is great. And the OP40 sounds as good as as the OP Pro to my ears (which are useless).

Optima is the best Ovation preamp in my opinion. I don't like the gain curve on the OP PRO.

Never had an OP-30 so can't answer your question, sorry.

When Ovation first introduced the Op-30,40,50, Kim K. told me the Op-50 was essentially a re-packaged Optima. Take away features and you have the 40 and 30.

I would guess if you have no need of XLR or a notch filter you'd be very happy with the Op-30.

The Op30 is pretty similar in features to the Op24+. The Op50 is very similar in features to the Optima in that it has 4-band EQ plus a notch. They all sound a little different to each other, but they all do what they are supposed to do. My personal favourites are the Optima and Op50, though the Op-Studio is very cool too.

The OpPro is a great-sounding preamp, and is kind of an updated Op24. Though I agree with Dave about the gain structure, the volume knob is damn near an on/off switch. Nothing happens until it's almost up full. Every one I've used has been like that.

what about the freq shifting of mids on the op30, is that a real benefit or just techie crapola??

It's a useful feature, but not something I's worry about if it wasn't there. The same thing can be achieved with a mid-sweep EQ on a good mixing console.

Ovation had a very good pre-amp in the Optima. Why they felt they had to mess with it eludes me.

Another vote for the Optima. Shame I don't own one now...
