I played around with the tempo shifting feature a bit. Basically you can shift the tempo (without changing pitch) in increments of 10%. So you can pick for example 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%. 100%. 110%, 120% the idea is that you could slow down songs to learn difficult passages.

I tried a few tunes at 10% (guitar licks I had recorded myself, plus some commercial mp3's that had been Mac'd in). At 10% the sound was "ok" but anything more than that it was unlistenable. maybe you could work our some fingerings but the quality was quite poor.

I should note that this was done in the 'good' sound quality setting. Another secret ninja setting in the advanced menu is sound quality, choice or 'good' or 'best' sort of like Sears bath towels. I didn't experiment with the 'best' setting. I would assume that this might improve things significantly but at the cost of storage space.

But I think this tempo shift, even at only 10%, could be a valuable tool in your learning kit.
