Well, I had a break through with "Yesterday" yesterday. All the tabs and YouTube 'lessons' I tried were in F. Ummmm, let's try key of G. Eureka! That works and sounds great (relatively speaking). 
BTW, a barre B7 from the F#m is much better than the 'open' B7.
Now, my for 'holy grail', "Classical Gas". Riiiight...

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | I've been playing 'Never Going Back Again' for years, in my own incomplete and adapted style.
Some months ago, I bought on of those on-line lessons to teach me properly. And finally, 2 nights ago, (inspired by Richard) I actually got around to watching and learning it.
I'm getting there, but it would've been easier to learn it from scratch... :rolleyes:
I'd also love to learn 'Wondering Where the Lions Are' (Cockburn) and/or 'Guru Man Blues' (Eric Bibb) if anyone's got the tabs or a tutorial on either... :D |

| When I realized an F was a barre E. I made s few other connections like that and the fretboard opened up. |

More time to move the fingers.
More expression.
Easier on the joints, tips and mucles.

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | My "a ha" moment came when I discovered that I strum much better without a pick--I use a method that, for lack of a better description, is a "fingers-on-the downstroke-thumb-on-the-upstroke" approach now.
I'd played 10 years in a Christian rock band, doing rhythm guitar, and had had to learn to strum with a flat pick after just fingerpicking--and I always pretty much felt like a fish out of water.
Now, I play with a pick when I absolutely have to (as in "mandolin"), but really, it was so freeing to discover that I could have a lot more control and play with more nuance without one.

Oh yes. I've taken a few runs at Little Bity (Alan Jackson). Simple chords, simple lyrics, but I can't seem to get the feel of the thing. Maybe there is something to this being a "Yankee" thing.
Also, My Maria (Brooks & Dunn)... I've only tried it a couple times but it's going to take more work that I thought.
"Tell Her No", (The Zombies)... I think I've got it down now but I had a hell of a time with the emphasis and cadence of the words.
And the list goes on. |

. Now that I can help you with. IIRC, they do it in Eb, but it seems that they have a guitar tuned down a half and are playing in E. If you can sing it in E (or want to tune down) it opens up a lot of possibilities. If you want more specifics, e-mail me. |

I've been trying it in "D". That might be part of the problem.
One thing I've learned is that the answer is not always "just change the key". Yeah the notes are still there but.... hmmmm.... how can I put this... sometimes in a different key you "accend" to a chord or note when it feels like you should be DE-cending. Does that make any sense?? |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | When it doesn't feel like your key, try many different keys. Then move it up and down the neck a little to see which has fingering that works for you. (the downside of capos is that you lose 'real estate' on the fretboard)
I would probably play Springsteens 'I'm On Fire' in F but capo wa-ay up the neck to use a C chord position. Gets the sound and contrasts with my relatively deeper voice. (not that deep, I just sing with a few castratos half the time......don't tell THEM, they're wives haven't told them.) |

Learning Beatles tunes can be tricky because they sometimes sped up/slowed down the recordings after the fact. Makes it hard to sit in front of the stereo and figure them out.
Example: I'd been playing Nowhere Man with my brother recently, and it's definitely played in E. After getting it all down, I thought it would be fun to play along with the CD.
Started the track, and discovered that their "E" was tuned lower than standard. Not even all the way down to E flat, but about halfway between!
I remember discovering the same thing you did about Yesterday, but luckily I recognized that the opening chord was a G just by the sound of it. |

Location: NJ | McCartney PLAYED it in G, but the guitar was tuned down to D, so it's actually in "F" (you can hear just a tiny bit of "slap" in the lowered bass string . .
The Beatles Analogy (I think Vol. II) has a recording of Macca working the song out w/Harrison where he says something to the effect:
". . I'm playing a "G", but's actually an "F" . ."
It's a great tune for the LongNeck. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | One was when I was still trying to figure out Time In a Bottle. I couldn't hear the guitar part when the singing started and I couldn't find a tab that was right. Stephen Terry sent me his tab. Bingo.
Second was on I'll Have to Say I Love You. I tried that 30 years ago, too, and couldn't get it. I didn't like any of the tabs. I finally played the bass run and started filling in barre chords or partial barre chords. After 30 years of fits and starts, I figured it out in a day or 2. |
